I find it annoying while driving ... others' mileage may vary ... but the main reason I bought the eliminator cable to turn it off for good is I don't want the extra wear and tear on the battery and starter. I would prefer both to last as long as possible, and cycling the car off and on several times on a typical commute or shopping excursion can't be good for them.
On top of the minuscule gas savings(.001 gallons in 3000 miles) the savings are eaten up by the cold start RPM being at 1800 RPM to get the cats up to temp for smog control. How much extra fuel does that use? And for those who claim that the restart of the engine is barely noticeable, my 2023 shakes like a parking lot carnival ride

after 12,000 miles on trip B of my 2021 premium 2.0 cvt, start stop system has saved .39 gallons of fuel. Not even a half a gallon. Not even two dollars worth of fuel.

Grabbed the auto stop eliminator knock off with very high reviews on amazon for 26 bucks - arrives Thursday. Can't wait.

I did a quick-and-dirty cost/benefit analysis based on a replacement starter's production cost of $50 and the battery's production cost of $25. Gas, where I live, runs about $3.50/gallon. Even at those prices, I would have to save a little less than 22 gallons of gas to break even. In the real world, the prices would be closer to $400 and $200 for a total of $600. I would have to save just shy of 1050 gallons to break even. These numbers are just estimates, but it tells me that it makes sense to buy the cable!

Oh come on guys, *** is almost worthless so there's no need to exaggerate. I've seen 0.2 gallons saved on a tank... like twice. I'm at over 50k miles, so that's like 22 gallons saved so far if i saved 0.2 gallong per 450-mile and 15 gallon tank.

So even being that generous, it would take 100k miles to maybe pay for a starter if I installed it myself.

You must really sit at lights a lot.

Question: I don't mind the auto shutoff at all. Perhaps little benefit but I feel like I'm saving something when sitting at a red light and the engine is off. However when it goes to restart about 10% of the time it seems to struggle and worries me. I always thought this constant on and off could be a lot more work on a starter or a battery. Any thoughts on which it would be? Battery issue, starter issue, or something else?

2021 Crosstrek Sport. 48,000 miles.

Love this thread because I didn't know there was a shut off eliminator that could be purchased until I read this. Thank you.
I bought the AutoStop Eliminator within two months of buying my Crosstrek Sport in 2021 and had it installed when upgrading the speaker system (the OEM speakers were awful) by a reputable local car stereo shop. Best decision I made to correct the two major deficiencies in my new Crosstrek!

Yesterday after I pulled into my garage, I reached for the shifter to place into park and shut the motor off. The AS/S turned off the motor and restarted the motor just in time for me to turn it off again. I hate it when I forget to disable the AS/S the moment I start the car. I'm getting better but it doesn't help that I just bought another Subaru that doesn't have AS/S and doesn't need the additional steps.

For me, it wouldn't be a cost/benefit analysis, it would be a small price to pay to remove the annoyance of the engine shutting off when I'm about to merge into traffic...

Which requires a lot more throttle (gas needed) to make up for the delay and reduced distance between you and the car you just pulled in front of. Fortunately most advances improve safety, not decrease it.

$26.99, 5-minute install, end of problem.

Just a note that auto shut-off has been common in Europe and other places for many years and I don't know of any reports of shortened starter or battery life. I've driven a number of cars there with that feature and it never bothered me except in one case of a Renault SUV with a manual trans. That took a little getting used to.

I suppose if the car was only used for very short trips with lots of stop and go, battery drain could be an issue but in most cases, what little charge is needed to re-start the engine is restored in short order.

I think its a good thing in the U.S. where we have a gazillion vehicles idling in drive throughs at any given time.

As I've posted before, Americans need to stop driving as much if they really care about the environment. For me, AS/S was an annoyance. Here's a novel idea: increase gas taxes to the levels they are in most civilized countries...
oh noooo. Please no.

No, if you drive less you'll have MORE money for steak and beer! ;)
If the price of gas doubles and that results in me driving half as much, that is a net of zero savings. But in reality, there is no way I, or most people, can cut their driving in half (you have to go to work, the store, etc.). So we would end up spending more money on fuel, thus having less to spend on steak and beer. Ugh.
