That Annoying Engine Shut-off

4269 Views 187 Replies 41 Participants Last post by  Sarang
Anyone who has ever had the experience of forgetting to press the magic button and having the car shut off just as one presses the gas pedal knows the feeling. It's like sitting atop a mountain lion while it coughs up a furball. Apart from being disconcerting one thinks "this just CAN'T be good for the engine."
Does anyone think that if enough of us complained Subaru might offer an optional software upgrade that turns the button into an "on" button with not shutting off the default?

Or you could get an Auto stop eliminator. Subaru needs to follow CAFE regulations and probably needs all the MPG savings it could get to qualify.

Auto Start/Stop is a pain I KEEP forgetting to turn it off when I get in the car, the nice thing about the 2024 its on the main screen lit up green to remind me to turn it off. Just hit the button after you start the car it will become muscle memory after a few weeks 🙂

I like AS/S. 🤷‍♂️

I find it very easy to predict, and it's simple enough to use more pressure on the gas pedal to turn the engine back on that even when I don't want it to do its thing I don't need to hit the button.

I haven't driven it much, but I've learned in my wife's 2024, if I know the light will change within 5s; I just apply light brake pressure when I come to a stop to prevent it from shutting off.

Full brake pressure is when it shuts down.

I'm pretty sure I've posted this here before: using light brake pressure to avoid AS/S could be dangerous as even a light rear-end could push you into cross-traffic.

IMO, if you don't like AS/S, then get an eliminator.

Unfortunately the AS/S works soo inconsistently it's a distraction and a danger. Saving 2 gallons a year isn't worth the risk/stress considering I already drive a very efficient car with great MPGs. Let the Escalade owners use AS/s, they consume twice the fuel I do. I recently bought a 2nd car without AS/S and it's wonderful, my engine never turns off unless I turn it off.

Yes, AS/S can be annoying... but only if you let it. And frankly, to me, those who complain about it are too used to having a machine think for them. But that just me.

This is hardly the first car I've ever had to reign in before driving it. Without touching on cars of yesterday, that had zero "technology" working in the background, a prime modern example was my '11 Sti. The routine of switching and toggling this and that was what went on each and every time it was driven. This isn't counting the laptop syncing,OBDII interface setup, etc. that was related to tuning and monitoring.

On Webber equipped cars? LMAO

So if a car's reality isn't exactly what I would like, like AS/S, it gets adjusted automatically, by me, when I buckle up. Same with whatever version of EyeSight's lane keeping stuff I want, or whatever.

Ancient proverb of mine: One must be smarter than the machine they operate. :)

Don't complain about Webers until you've had a V12 Jag with four of them, and tried to balance them... ;)

All you owners complaining about the Auto Stop-Start feature on all new Subarus really need to get over this real soon.
This is how it is going to be for the rest of the time there are still private vehicles to be driven. Which is not that long in the future.

I have driven a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring for 9 years now, and have never had a problem with the Auto Stop-Start.
This model and year were the first Subaru to have this feature. I goes not affect my Jack Rabbit starts from a complete stop.
It is also not - "this just CAN'T be good for the engine." It saves the wear on the engine.

Also the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is the only model Subaru to have not any Recalls!

When moving from a AS/S stop, doesn't your hybrid run on the electric motor? If so your experience with AS/S is not a fair comparison to an ICE-only vehicle.

I’m so used to it at this point that I’m not even aware. I don’t find it obtrusive at all. I think turning it on/off frankly is more of a nuisance.

I recently purchased a auto start /stop device and it works as advertised..it took me all of 1 minute to install. I bought it from Amazon for $27 and worth every penny. If need be you can disable by pressing the button.

I really shouldn't have had a sip of beer in my mouth when I read this. Nothing like spewing it out your nose. :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, that is simultaneously the funniest and most accurate description of a/s/s I have ever read.

joeyfordham47 beat me to it. There is a $27 cable on Amazon that fixes it for good. Best money I ever spent on a car.

Not gonna happen. My money, I spent it on my car, I want it to operate the way I expect. And I don't want that kind of wear and tear on my battery and starter, just to save some infinitesimal amount of fuel.

This is how it is going to be for the rest of the time there are still private vehicles to be driven. Which is not that long in the future.
Well, that's a battle for the next generation to fight. I'm old enough to complain about "features" like this and also to (unfortunately have to) pay for a workaround. There will always be workarounds (legal or not) for anything that annoys enough people. All you have to do is look at the plethora of fake vax cards circulating during COVID to see what people will do when you try to force something on them that they emphatically do not want.

Time to go cue up "Red Barchetta" by Rush....
