That Annoying Engine Shut-off

Anyone who has ever had the experience of forgetting to press the magic button and having the car shut off just as one presses the gas pedal knows the feeling. It's like sitting atop a mountain lion while it coughs up a furball. Apart from being disconcerting one thinks "this just CAN'T be good for the engine."
Does anyone think that if enough of us complained Subaru might offer an optional software upgrade that turns the button into an "on" button with not shutting off the default?

Unfortunately the AS/S works soo inconsistently it's a distraction and a danger. Saving 2 gallons a year isn't worth the risk/stress considering I already drive a very efficient car with great MPGs. Let the Escalade owners use AS/s, they consume twice the fuel I do. I recently bought a 2nd car without AS/S and it's wonderful, my engine never turns off unless I turn it off.

Yes, AS/S can be annoying... but only if you let it. And frankly, to me, those who complain about it are too used to having a machine think for them. But that just me.

This is hardly the first car I've ever had to reign in before driving it. Without touching on cars of yesterday, that had zero "technology" working in the background, a prime modern example was my '11 Sti. The routine of switching and toggling this and that was what went on each and every time it was driven. This isn't counting the laptop syncing,OBDII interface setup, etc. that was related to tuning and monitoring.

On Webber equipped cars? LMAO

So if a car's reality isn't exactly what I would like, like AS/S, it gets adjusted automatically, by me, when I buckle up. Same with whatever version of EyeSight's lane keeping stuff I want, or whatever.

Ancient proverb of mine: One must be smarter than the machine they operate. :)

All you owners complaining about the Auto Stop-Start feature on all new Subarus really need to get over this real soon.
This is how it is going to be for the rest of the time there are still private vehicles to be driven. Which is not that long in the future.

I have driven a 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid Touring for 9 years now, and have never had a problem with the Auto Stop-Start.
This model and year were the first Subaru to have this feature. I goes not affect my Jack Rabbit starts from a complete stop.
It is also not - "this just CAN'T be good for the engine." It saves the wear on the engine.

Also the 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek Hybrid is the only model Subaru to have not any Recalls!

Not gonna happen. My money, I spent it on my car, I want it to operate the way I expect. And I don't want that kind of wear and tear on my battery and starter, just to save some infinitesimal amount of fuel.

Well, that's a battle for the next generation to fight. I'm old enough to complain about "features" like this and also to (unfortunately have to) pay for a workaround. There will always be workarounds (legal or not) for anything that annoys enough people. All you have to do is look at the plethora of fake vax cards circulating during COVID to see what people will do when you try to force something on them that they emphatically do not want.

Time to go cue up "Red Barchetta" by Rush....

I agree. I have a '23 hybrid, and was a bit perplexed trying to follow this discussion. That is, until last weekend when, having dropped off our car for some warranty analysis of a separate problem, we got an ICE '23 loaner for the weekend. My, what a shudder at each as/s! Yes, the hybrid does the switchover AFTER starting from a stop in EV mode, and is so smooth you have to really try hard to detect when it happens. Also no shudder when the engine stops, which is often prior to the vehicle fully stopping. My owners' manual hardly even mentions as/s. The only downside to the hybrid is the limited EV range, ~17 miles (and the tiny trunk space), but since most of our driving is city, we usually can go a month or so between fill-ups. RIP, Crosstrek hybrid!

I really shouldn't have had a sip of beer in my mouth when I read this. Nothing like spewing it out your nose. :ROFLMAO:

Seriously, that is simultaneously the funniest and most accurate description of a/s/s I have ever read.

joeyfordham47 beat me to it. There is a $27 cable on Amazon that fixes it for good. Best money I ever spent on a car.

Turned mine off (seat belt chime). But no, I dont expect Subaru to reverse what the gov mandates them to do. You know the gov.....worried about those pressing critical issues like start of world war 3, invasion, corrupt bureaucracys, I mean if an engine turns off at a stop light.

...switching points....

I love the self-righteous that are personally offended when someone turns off thier own a/s/s. I get a kick out of reading their posts.:ROFLMAO:; & yes I turned A/S/S off too. I hope yall can sleep at night knowing that.

Gov't doesn't mandate AS/S. My friend ordered a Ford Raptor and was able to specify AS/S Delete, I saw it myself. My 23 WRX Manual also doesn't have AS/S. Too bad remote starts eliminate any potential fuel savings from the AS/S. TBH I do use as/s if I'm in a drive thru, there's no distraction or danger creeping forward in a drive thru. I use the fuel saved to power my Lawnmower.

I know its not...they mandate CAFE regs that force manufactures to do that crap.

I do not like the Auto stop and Auto restart, I have disabled it. Before I disabled it I was stopped, pulling out of a driveway with the wheels turned hard to the right .... then the car shut off and the power steering went off as well which made the steering wheel turn violently in my hands. I was not pleased. I am not someone who lets my car idle a lot, I do shut if off if I expect to be stopped for 2 minutes or so, but I want to do it myself and I never shut it off at a traffic signal.
