As far as I know all modern cars are like this. I know my wife's 2017 Rav4 is. Every once in awhile I will get in her car to gas it up or go somewhere with her and get my ears blasted off when she or I crank the car up. "You were really jamming out last night, weren't you, honey?"

apb: Not disagreeing with your idea, but it "shouldn't" even need be a physical toggle switch, it's all code. Just change the code.

We bought a couple of smart cars a few years back (great cars, btw) and they both default to radio off when the car is started.

I would call those cars patronizing, not smart. A proper audio system would be designed so on start up it would resume the setting when it had been turned off. But that would be acknowledging that owners had legitimate preferences that should be respected.

Before you turn the car off, press and hold the volume button (about 3 seconds) until the head unit goes black (off). It should not play when you turn the car back on this way. If you just tap the volume button, that is simply muting the volume temporarily, not actually turning it off, and you will be blasted with the radio when you turn the engine back on.
tried this
it works
select "radio" when you want it back on
easy, peasy

I have also found another solution in these forums that works for me om my 2020 Forester. Preset one the Sirius radio Stations to 0 and select it before you turn off engine. This is the userid and is a silent station. It will remain silent when you start car and does not affect your apple or android connections or navigation audio.
This is what I've been doing since the day I bought my 2020 Premium. Works like a charm. I exclusively use Apple CarPlay and it doesn't interfere with that at all.

I stand corrected. I tested it. The smart car radio does actually default to "On" while other accessories do not default to the previous selection if the ignition is turned off & back on.
I don't usually use the OEM radio as it's total crap.

I am new to the Forum and first time Subaru owner with a 2022 Crosstrek. In review past posts I note that this radio issue has been occurring at least since 2017 model year. Can anyone explain to me why Subaru, who otherwise makes such a great ca,r is unable to fix this problem?
Not Broke, Not a Problem. Don't know where some of you folks are from but not my neck of the woods... it IS broke and IS a problem. I took my car in last week for the first service and ask that they fix this. By the time my car was ready everybody in the waiting room was talking about this and I can't say a single person thought it was okay that it worked this way. Some thought they hadn't turned the radio off and some thought they were going nuts. If this is a selling feature why do they not tell ANYONE of this great feature! By the way mine's still broke!

Sorry to hear that it's "still broke".
Because it isn't.
There are likely a million cars on the road from many manufacturers that are also "sill broke.".
Hope you get it fixed.

SOLVED NBS Dave nailed it! Hold the power button in for 3 seconds and it turns off. YES OFF! Quickly pressing the power button mutes the radio.
Appreciate the shout out.
But it wasn't me who gave that tip.
It was DSM.
He gets the atta boy!

I Try to remember to lower my volume to 0 when I return home as we live in an apt and having the radio on when I remote start early in the morning is an issue as we will disturb our neighbours

I'm so glad I'm not alone. Found this page googling this very problem with 2021 Crosstrek which I otherwise think is great. Only thing I really don't like is the console controls. I understand pushing the knob isn't really on/off, but mute. Then it should STAY MUTED when I turn it back on. Also, there needs to be a screen sleep timer or at least a "visual mute" to make the screen black but keep everything working (obviously not when in reverse). The "hold it down for a few seconds" or navigating a bunch of menus is distracting at best; dangerous as worst. It should be as quick and easy as hitting mute or switching radio stations. This could probably be fixed with a firmware upgrade if they chose to.
