I took my 2 week old car into the dealer for 3 things to be checked: wheel alignment which was slightly out and causing the steering wheel to be slightly turned to the left, dash rattles and "the 100kph whine".

They fixed the wheel alignment and rattles and reported that their initial impression was that the noise was the timing chain, but when they checked the Subaru website there is a dealer advisory note saying that the 100kph whine is coming from the transmission and is currently under investigation by Subaru. The dealer said the wording implies that all the manual transmission XVs have it but not everyone can hear it.

I suggest that if you have the whine you register the fact with your dealer asap so that if they come up with a fix it is known that you and your car are among those affected.

Mmmm, thanks for that info Gail. That was my theory, whine is specific to the manual transmission. Very astute of your dealer, do you mind telling us who the dealer is? Other people in your area might want to take their XV there!
Keep us posted on any more information you get. I guess the Impreza has it too, being pretty much the same?

Thanks Gail for the info. I have the manual and you can add me to this growing list who have noticed the 100kpm whine. I can hear a hint of it at lower speeds too but it is definitely most prominent at this speed. This is my first Subaru so at first I thought it was just the way the boxer engine sounds but apparently this is not normal like the "growl" people talk about.

Yes my Subaru XV suffers the high pitch whine, most loud at 100km a hour, but builds from around 85-90km. Subaru are aware of this issue. My car has been back twice so far for this issue. Both times they have removed and replaced the transfer bearing and re-shimed. The first time made no difference to the noise. On doing it the second time it is a little less noticeable. The dealer just tells me that this noise is considered normal for the XV, but I am far from happy, brand new cars should not be putting out a whine from the gearbox. The second trip back to the dealer was also to fix another problem with the gearbox, in that I couldn't put the car into 6th gear, that was fixed with a re-fittment of the shifter housing and cables. My experience with the 6 speed manual gearbox has not been very good by far and I am not very satisfied with it's operation.

Hilock, none of that is very good at all!
A whine from the gearbox in a brand new car should not be considered normal at all. Fancy the 6th gear not working!??! Geez...
I'd be upset too...
I hope you can get it all sorted. Just keep hassling them until its fixed! But you shouldn't have to do that with a new car..

We have two MY13 6 speed manual XV's and I haven't noticed a whine from either of them, but I will take note next time.

I'm having the same issue with my US model with the 5-spd. I get the whine at 60 mph (100 km/h). Its not awful but it really does sounds like a transmission or transfer case issue. I also have the dash rattle so I'll be taking mine in for both. I imagine the dealer will tell me the whine is a non-repairable issue, but at least it will be recorded. On the positive side, its a great audible clue as to what my speed is. Considering that most speed limits here are 55, the whine lets me know I'm right where I need to be.

Hi I'm from Brunei which mine is a jap built oz spec model 6-spd. I also hv that whine at 100kph. I am currently at 3400kms and will ask the dealer their opinion when I do the 5000kms service.just to note that my gearbox is notchy going into 1-2nd gear and sometimes reverse. I wonder if anyone here has changed their gearbox oil as a run in procedure like the engine oil or is it not recommended?

I also have the noise in my 6spd manual xv at 100kph. I again complained to subaru yesterday. Originally they replaced my bearings in gearbox which did not work, second time they explained it was a harmonics issue and there was no resolution and yesterday they told me that its a boxer engine sound.
Not sure i'm happy with the explanation. What have others been told?
I'm going to keep at it as the noise irritates the crap out of me.

I do have a gearbox whine going up through the gears with easy acceleration but dissapearing as I go into 5th.. it has the feint resemblance of straight cut gears only 1000x quieter along with induction noise getting back on the throttle.. sounds fantastic and get a kick out of it every time i Drive... I will test mine at 100 km/h with the radio off to see if I have just been completely oblivious to it.

My car was going in for a gearbox change, but was informed Subaru are currently developing a repair for this issue, something to do with tail shafts I was told. I'm waiting for this service bulletin to be
released so my car can go in. I'm told this fix will solve the issue.

AH HA! I am not crazy.

I drove a 900 mile road trip this past weekend and definitely heard the whine at around the 60 mph mark. I thought it was alternator whine coming through the stereo, but then turned off the stereo and it continued.

Has anyone heard anything more concrete on this issue from their Subaru dealer?

Add me to the list. My US market xv does this. SOUNDS like its coming from under the car, maybe a little to the rear. It is not normal as far as the 5mt or fb20 are comcearned. I traded a 2012 Impreza and it didnt make this sound ever.

There it is, post no.23.

My 6spd has a mechanical whine when accelerating not overly intrusive i believe it is the chain drive, i'm not overly concerned as most cars do have some kind of drive train or engine whine there is alot going on only a few feet in front of you and under you, and magnify it x5 if your listening out for things, it is esp louder when cold..
