G'day, that will most likely be a transmission noise. Mine has it, I'm not worried however, its almost impossible to get gearboxes absolutely silent. The way to tell is to try different gears at the same speed and see if the noise alters in any way. e.g -cruise at 100, try 5th, 4th, 6th, even 3rd (the car will handle that no probs). You might find that in some gears the noise disappears and others it is noticeable. The second piece of evidence is the fact that the noise varies with road speed, not engine speed. Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Stork

Mine makes the sound regardless of gear selection.
Once the vehicle hits 60mph/100kph, it emits a high pitch noise that the 5mt in my 2012 Impreza didnt make.
Its the only gripe I have with the car. Other than that I LOVE it. But its sure going to suck on long trips down the interstate.

Hi, I've had my car for over 11,000kms nw and I did post abt this a couple of pages back. Came back from a 1,000km road trip with hard overtaking, easy cruising and some town driving and seems like the noise in mine has disappeared.

Mine definitely isnt getting any quieter yet.
But after a couple thousand miles of driving I have discovered that its engine load-related. At 65mph if I take my foot off the accelerator pedal the sound stops immediately.
Very annoyed with this sound!

Scooby, I thought you were married? lol

"Awesome I'll have some tails soon
Going to QLD in 4 weeks time towing a camper trailer ( got to have some tail there)"

Sorry in America 'tail' can mean something else, delicious, but different.

Having worked at machining, each part has it's own tolerances weather it's a gear, or bearing. Now you take all those parts and put them together with each one having it's own little + or- of tolerances. Add a car with very little sound deadening material. I can see why certain cars would make a different noises than others. Other than taking that particular car on a through road test before buying it. I don't think their's a way to avoid this other than maybe changing lubrication or adding soundproofing/deadening material.

no sound deadening material would mask the high pitched banshee wail...
I switched my gear oil front and rear and that had no effect. Even the local service manager agrees its driveline related. He said it sounds like pinion noise like one would get from an improperly lifted truck. The pinion angle or depth is the main suspect here.
Sucks that so far for 15,000 miles I've had to hear a sound like a dental drill at speeds between 55-65 mph. Even the radio doesnt fully mask it.

I saw this on the Subaru tech info site. Might not be related but worth investigating.

12-155-13R Technical Service Bulletin "Reed-Type" Wind Sound from Front Windshield Molding Feb 28, 2014 [View PDF]

Bulletin Description: This bulletin provides a procedure to eliminate a "reed-type" whistling or screeching sound which has been isolated to originating from the front windshield upper molding / weatherstrip. The sound is most prevalent while driving at highway speeds (approximately 70-75 mph) when there are crosswinds present. The procedure involves the installation of 2 small strips of EPDM foam material, one under each upper corner area of the windshield molding lip to prevent the condition from occurring.

Subaru are a very unique animals.

The rear differential in my car had to be replaced with only 200 miles on the odometer. It was a very muffle sound. like a thump. low tone. They had to ship a brand new part from Japan and they performed a full swap. The differential fluid was as silver as my car. When i ask the mechanic. " were you curious to see what cause the problem?" He told me, "His instructions was to swap and ship the defective part to SOA HQ for analysis.

mine isnt a wind noise but many do have that particular issue. I have already had a ride along with the manager and its agreed that its driveline related.

my problem is its been several months with no resolution in sight...
What state are you in? Any lemon laws that you can invoke? Only warranty issue I ever suffered was with a 2000 GMC 2500 Sierra. Had a drop of coolant on one of the valve cover bolts. They replaced the bolt and I still saw a small amt of coolant there. On the second trip to dealer, they replace the engine which had only 16,000 miles on it.
