Hi everyone :)

First time car buyer here. Went to my local Subaru (VA) and fell in love with a white 2021 premium crosstrek.

I was quoted ~$28,800 OTD price which based on my research seems to be a bit high? Thoughts? This price is based on the amount given through the Costco auto program. Would really appreciate any feedback!!

For reference, the car has option package #14 (blind spot detection w/ rear cross, traffic alert and lane change assist, power moonroof, keyless access with push button start, + 6 way power driver’s seat) and popular package #2 (mirror compass with home link, rear bumper cover, splash guards, rear seat back protector, and all weather floor liners).

i really, really want to commit but as my first car I wanted to exercise due diligence and make sure I was getting the best bang for my buck. Can’t gauge if this price is too high or if it can be negotiated.

Thank you all for your help!!

Lots of info here:

I highly recommend that ppl use Edmunds.com to get the expected price for your zip code. I've been using Edmunds.com for the past 10+ yrs with all of our car purchases. And, it's a good gauge on what to aim for when dealing with the dealerships. Also, I suggest only haggling via email. I've gotten near or below invoice pricing for all the cars I've purchased/leased in the past 10-15 yrs.

IN that price range, you should be looking at a Limited or a Sport Model. I just went to the Subaru site and selected build your own. They say there are no packages for the Premium. In fact, you cannot select a package.

IF you go to the limited or Sport Model, yes.....packages are available under build your own.

It could be dealers can pick stuff, or install it later, for the Premium, but....who knows?

Really, in the end, the only thing that matters is that you got the car you wanted for the price you were willing to pay. If you are happy with the deal, then that is the only thing that matters. Having said that - don't pay more than you have to.

In my area, Crosstreks are in high demand, and dealers cannot keep them on the lot. They will not really deal that much, if at all. If you won't buy it for their price, someone else will. Supply and demand.

$28k out the door seem very expensive in my opinion. I was quoted yesterday $30.5 for a 2021 black sport forester out the door. How are you buying this?
Financed? Through whom? Sometimes that’s how they bake the price. Feel free to always walk away if you fee you are not getting a good deal. Good luck. The Crosstrek sport it is an awesome car. I had it for a week as a loaner while the fix mine.

Some banks offer car buying programs. I’ve had hit/miss experience with them (2 of my banks have offered this service), but do use their sites to build exactly what I want and see what the price is for each add-on, package, etc...

I used it to get the invoice price for my build, then went in and asked for exact items, even had the package numbers bu t didn’t tell them I had the price already picked out until they came back at about $3k over... Then I mentioned that I knew the price was $x for this package, $x for that item to add, etc., walked out paying invoice incl delivery (then add tax, bogus paperwork I couldn’t back them off of, tags...). IIRC, paid $24.2k for my 6mt premium, package with home link mirror and heated seats, side dimming mirrors, and rear area rubber mat. Added all the other stuff aftermarket at $$$ off dealer invoice, comparatively.

The number you got does look a little like there’s more room for improvement.

Agree - which is why I didn’t use the program to buy, just to price out what I wanted. The one I used showed 2 things: bottom-line invoice price and the bank/CU ‘deal’ price. The nominal dealer markup was from the dealer’s site. Mostly the buying programs are there to save you some haggling time (and get the bank/CU a small slice).

Waiting until the end of a slow month helped too - only had to mention invoice price once before they agreed in order to close a deal for end of month numbers (per discussion with the manager after the deal was made).

When the car came in, I used my own bank (better rate), then discussed my trade-in, and used my loyalty coupon and one other coupon I knew they’d honor.

Well Kitty, if you were family, I’d tell you not to do it. If this is your first loan (not sure your situation). The dealership of all places will try to screw you over. There’s so many factors to everyone price as well. I’m also unsure of your situation but there’s a lot more options.

a lot of things you need to look at. Subaru offers TONS of things you will probably NEVER USE.... and they add it to the price.... My mom just got a '21 Premium for $23.5 back in January. Since then she's only driven about 1200 miles. it has all these options that she is NEVER going to use (eyesight, auto start/stop, cruise control). less powerful engine (live in NYC). my my mom just need to go to the grocery store and see her grand daughter once a week. i guess depending on where you live depends on how much 'luxury' you need for the car. the less 'luxury' you have, the less it'd cost you to fix once the warranty runs out.

Not the best comparison, but we paid about $28,000 OTD for our 2021 Crosstrek Sport in December with the same options, except the power driver's seat.

Yep, higher taxes but universal healthcare but let's not go there - @Montanan might be awake by now... 😸

Besides, doc fees are relevant to this thread as they go directly to the dealer, pure profit. Sales tax does not go to the dealer. If you're getting a deal of $500 under invoice but the doc fees are $700 then you're really paying the dealer $200 over invoice.

Honestly, I found that the absolute BIGGEST bang for the buck was on the Limited. I bought one in November with almost every bell/whistle I could put in it (only things I didn’t were the crossbars and the illuminated foot wells). Total out the door was around $32,000. All of the options in the premium are standard on the limited.
Bybthe way, if you call Subaru central, and say you’re considering, they‘ll send you a $500 coupon and a box of brownies.
