Upgrading Head Unit

I was thinking of asking about this at the dealer since I am going to have them look at my breaks. But I thought I would ask here first and see if I am just barking up a bare tree.

I have a Serius satellite radio and a 2018 Premium. Currently, I have to put the radio in a cup holder and use my right hand to push any buttons. I would rather not have to take my eyes off the road. I heard that the 2019 Premium has satellite radio built in. Anybody here understands this stuff well enough to say if it would be possible to "upgrade" my headunit for a 2019's? That way I could possible controll it from the wheel or voice command.

Speaking of which, does anybody know if you get a Bluetooth radio, can it be controlled via said commands? Or does that still require reaching over to manipulate the unit by hand?

In may past experience you are better off going with an aftermarket as Astro said. The oem headunit will probably be very expensive just "because". Better HU's like Denon, Alpine etc will have modules you can buy to incorporate the controls from the steering wheel.

Doca will probably have some sage advice for you when he sees this post. Give it about an hour...

Sorry I’m late.

It will fit and just about everything about the factory infotainment unit in the 2018 and 2019 Crosstrek is the same. The Gen 3.1 in the 19’s has marginally better Bluetooth power and that’s about it except for the side pcm (xm) added to the 6.5” and that they now all use the same main pcm. Currently in short supply, it’ll probably take a up to a month but for only $1300 (6.5”), $1700 (8”) or 2500 (8” nav) you’ll get.... better Bluetooth, right?

Imagine the awesome aftermarket headunit you could get for that! I think wheel, camera, etc. harnesses are available now.

Thank you so much for the responses.

Aftermarket units seem to be the resounding answer. The question then, is there any problems with integration? Like with the backup camera? I was wondering since it has those backup lines and curve. Is that set to the car at all or are they all generic and can be transplanted to any car with no difference? Would other features like the voice commands still work as before?

Not going to do it right now, but thinking of possibilities for the future.
