Hey everyone,
I'm getting my 2024 Crosstrek in a month or two and I was wondering what type of roof rack any of you have purchased in the past that you liked for a Mountain Bike?
Thanks!

My tandem weights under 40 lbs, the single bikes are all 20 lbs or less, easy-peasy for getting them on the carrier rack. Plus they are fork mounted, so the weight of the front wheel is not included. My better half has mounted bikes on the roof with no trouble.
Mounted on the roof rack keeps the bikes from the harm of other drivers, especially in parking lots.

With that said, I haven't used the roof rack since I bought my first F150 in 1997. I can fit 5 bikes comfortably in the beds on my 2x4 handmade racks with Bike Tights holding the forks.

BUT, if I had a 75 lb. eBike I'd be using the bumper mount too.

@PegCitySubaru I thought I'd add this as most people just gave hitch rack recommendations despite your specifically asking about roof racks. I recently got this Subaru specific (I think because of the weird angles of the Aero crossbars) Thule Roof Rack and quite like it! Part number Subaru SOA567B020, I found it online for $158 with free shipping from Rafferty Subaru. I've taken it on winding back roads and on the highway and it feels very sturdy and stable. I have an XL frame 29inch wheel bike, any larger might not fit. The bike will fit inside the car too with the seats down if I take the front wheel off, just in case you were curious about that as well. Have fun and Congrats on the new Crosstrek!

Thanks for the information! I'll take a look at this type of roof rack then! I just need to get the crossbar first.
Pretty easy to remove and put on your roof?

Spent years transporting road bikes in europe. I would always avoid outside exposure or direct roof tops due to frontal speed projectile experiences. The Crosstrek is a different style but we'd break down the front and rear wheels, use a chain pulley rear right lug fitting and lay or stage them half rear seat folded to trunk. Theft. Other than that, when you have a $4.500USD++ carbon fibre frame exposed to any elements, it's hard to justify frontal objects hitting the steering tube and forks at 75mph speeds highway, never mind bad weather. There are better alternatives.

never in 45 years of transporting Steel, Aluminum, Carbon Fiber, Scandium, Titanium have I ever had an issue on the roof.
Of course, if I had a choice it was AWAYS transported inside or behind the cab of a truck.

But on a roof rack I used this:

We perhaps agree on that, and how many times are we all full kilt [4] passengers inside a Crosstrek? Up State, NY you have to keep careful eyes on anything on a roof. Theft is keen and actually promoted. The days of cones, bearing and Phil Wood Grease may have passed into never never land but there are differences in rolling 40kph in a saddle in sever weather conditions and drivimg 110kph in pea sized hail as we had yesterday.

We prefer inside the compartment, above all ...and completely under cover.

Theft.

But I hear you.

Agreed, But, when I was racing, there were many a day when the old Honda Accord would have 4 of us inside with all bikes on the roof rack. Bikes on top were worth twice what the Accord was worth. LOL

Phil Wood is spoken in this house. I also raced a season on Winner Hubs. I broke enough of those that the company stopped sending me replacements ( or maybe they just went out of business). We still have a custom Harry Quinn in the family decked out in Campy Nuovo Record.

Beautiful Super Six, last C-dale I had was 40+ years ago..... a 3.0 crit frame. I built it up mostly to use on my rollers.
God knows for sure I'd break my neck in several places if I tried rollers now. Still have the rollers, but alas the 3.0 suffered a cruel death by Buick. In fact it almost got me.
