Replaced LED turn signal lights with better LED turn signal lights

I originally had these turn signal LEDs and always wondered, during the day, were they bright enough. No is the answer. So, doing some research, I found these new LEDs to take over duty. I would have been happy with the older LEDs, but these just blew the old one's out of the water.

Old v. New

New (on left), Old (on right)

Both on new

...just in case someone blows a fuse for turn signals.

I hope this does not become and irritant, but IMHO, the further they can see me with turn signals, the better.

that looks powerful, only makes me wonder if you are going to blind the guy behind/in front of you. I agree, the further they see, the better, but at the same time, the brighter, the more annoying they will be for those immediately around you. I can imagine them distracting me as "what the F**K is that light in my mirrors?" kind of a situation.... but meybe it's just me or maybe the lights are not THAT bright :)

I agree and honestly, I do not have an objective view. I want these to be bright (at least the rears). I guess I'll just have to get behind a cop and turn on my blinker(s). See if s/he can give me an objective opinion sans a ticket.

They might be bright when you first turn them on, but most eBay / Amazon LEDs will lose a dramatic amount of output once the heat sets in Nick C.
No doubt and I agree ... provided that, like reverse lights, are not used but occasionally. I don't think many of us (under 70) drive with our blinkers on.

They look like the have projector lenses which is not the goal of a blinker or brake light. You don't need to be lighting things up with either. The goal is to be visible and that's it. Just turn one on and walk away from your car and look at it and you will know whether it will bother someone.

Can't walk but this when I see a missed sucker punch. You are correct, goal is to be visible. Have you ever seen a dim LED blink? How far could you see it on an XV that has DRLs? Thank you on the lesson on bothering someone. As it turns out, they are not bothersome at night and look great in the day (which was the goal for me... daylight visibility).

Nick:
I just purchased a bunch of LED's from your organization after talking to you over a week ago. This is completely different to to what the web site says. Here is the last line on your web site when clicking on the Front Turn Signals " We do not believe one is available for your vehicle, because your flasher is built-in to the vehicle's computer. You will need to use resistors for your vehicle.

So based on this statement I purchased two (2) sets of resistors. There isn't a replacement for the Flasher on your site only the resistors. I haven't installed the resistors yet, can I swap them for a flasher?

Send me a message if this is an option.

Don

Diode Dynamics sells the LED flasher module on their website. I have it for my turn signals and it works perfectly! It's the CF18 (LM449) flasher module. You only need ONE for the entire car and it is only $10. It can be a pain to install but it's simple for the most part, goes under the front dash behind the steering wheel. It's just an awkward position to be in and the stock flasher doesn't want to come out easily either. But no need to splice wires for resisters, you won't need those.

This works great in my MY2014 XV, I'm not sure about the MY2015 but I really don't see why not. I remember seeing this on this forum before so I quoted it FWIW..
A few things we discovered in testing,

The 2015 XV Crosstrek does indeed have CK-configured sockets for the rear turn signals. The fronts are not CK, so any standard replacement 7440 bulb will operate correctly

The flasher module is a CF18, just like 99% of all Subaru vehicles

LeviMcD what trim and model year XV do you have? It not too hard to look under the front dash to see if you have one. You don't need to remove anything to find it. I can post a picture later of where exactly it is located if it'll help. Like I had said my 2014 XV premium 5MT US market does have a relay and it works great, I posted the link for it in a previous post in this thread #17 that has the exact part that I bought and use.

1. There is no 'buy' or 'add to cart' button.

2. Some are saying the rear blinkers are CK style, what did you buy?

Yes the rear turn signals are CK, so are the brake lights and the rear parking lights (not positive about the reverse but I believe it is, all on the same wire harness). Diode doesn't have the CK style rear turn signals listed on their website, I had to call them to order it. They only have the hp11's in Amber and Red in the CK style, not the other two bulbs (they're plenty bright enough). They're great to talk to and will help you figure this out. When you call to order the rear turns ask about it, whether it's in stock. Check out this other thread for more info too, that's the thread that helped me out!!

I think you are right coletrain, at first I wasn't so sure but that one shown on their website looks exactly the same and has all the same numbers on it. Except theirs is printed with black ink and mine white, strange?

I haven't been able to figure out how to access the Front Turn Signal bulbs to swap them with the LED's I purchased. from Diode Dynamics. I went to their site and they have videos for everything but the front Turn Signal bulbs. Anyone know how to access the front Turn Signal bulbs on the 2015 XV Crosstrek Special Edition (Premium)?

Also if anyone knows where the flasher is located and any secret to swapping that out would help also.

Thanks in advance.

Those front turn signals are the worst of all the bulbs to get to!! For the passengers side of the car I just dismantled the front of the air intake box, fairly easy if you've changed the air filter out. The drivers side was the worst, I ended up taking the battery out to get it out, taking the tube off for the windshield washer fluid helped but didn't give me enough room. I will also note that taking the front bumper off didn't give me enough room to get past the battery either. That's what worked for me anyways.
I was able to get to the c-lights (eyebrow) and the parking lights with only taking the small felt pieces off of each side. That didn't help so much for the turn signals that are deeper into the assembly.

Since a lot of people are asking, here are some photos and a small write up of where and how to change out that flasher relay.
***NOTE: This worked on my MY2014 XV Crosstrek Premium 5MT US market. I do NOT know if this is the case for different trim levels and/or newer years.***

All you need is medium sized flathead screwdriver, an extra light (flashlight, headlamp) and a towel if you don't want to lay on the floor. This is an awkward position to be in and you can really only get one hand up there.
First push the drivers side seat all the way back, lay down and look up, the flasher is to the right of the steering column.
Image

That box is where the flasher relay is located in the stock position, yours should look like the third image in this post (the part pictured is the LED flasher relay module I got from Diode Dynamics). The blue arrow points at the steering column. Detach the flasher from the white wire connector with all the wires on it, leave that alone you're just unplugging it. Then take your flathead screwdriver and pry the flasher off (red arrow, between the flasher and the clip holding it up), I think you have to turn it a bit and pull down. Don't use excessive force it will eventually come off.

That's the white clip that holds the flasher up. Very small flimsy clip, the new flasher will just slide in and snap into place. You could zip tie it somewhere else if you want instead but keep in mind that box also makes the turn signal indicator noise when driving, too far away and you won't hear it. Then just plug the wire connector in, check that it all works and your good to go!!
For reference the next 3 pictures are the stock Subaru flasher relay.

Bottom shown, if yours looks like that then this should work for you!!

Again you want to find an LED flasher relay module CF18 (LM449)

THANKS dirtyXV. I love you Mannn. That is awesome photos and directions for the Flasher replacement. Diode Dynamics is out of stock but they are on back order I was told. As soon as they arrive they will ship mine. Then Good-Bye Hyper flash.

As for getting access to the Turn Signal Bulbs, I heard there is a trap panel in each wheel well that gets you to the Turn signal lights. I've seen where some took the front wheels off and others say just turn the wheel to open the space to gain access.

Oh my gosh, hardest car light I ever had to change. It took me over an hour to change the two front turn signal lights from bulbs to LED's. I could not find the trap door inside the wheel wells. I ended up going in next to the windshield washer tank to get the driver side. The passenger side was almost impossible. I removed a screw to the air intake as well as the cover for the the engine compartment to the wheel well. I was able to get all the boomerang lights through there and hoped I could reach the turn signal bulbs. I learned my 37" arms (shirt sleeve length) were about 4" too short. I also realized my hands are a little too big. But once I removed the air flow chute to the air filter box and removed the one nut, I was able to move it enough to get my hand in there. Like I said at the beginning, this is the hardest bulb change ever. Why is it necessary to make it this difficult? Regular bulbs burn out and have to be replaced. You shouldn't have to dismantle the front end of the car to do it. But it's done. Now lets hope the LED's last as long as the warranty. Thanks all for the intel. It at least gave me the idea where to start.

Now once Diode Dynamics sends me the flasher I'll climb in under the dash. This 61 year old body isn't use to all these position requirements just to make the simplest of modifications/changes.

Sounds like my '07 civic. To replace the headlight bulbs the manual told you to turn the wheel toward the car and then go through the fender liner. If you popped the hood there was no way you were accessing the bulbs. Luckily I only had to change them once when I upgraded to hid lights. Even then I took off the bumper and removed the headlights.

I don't know why it was designed like that, but the stock incandescents do last a long enough time that maybe they figured it's not too bad. I said they would be the worst and I understand the difficulty! I've taken the bumper off a dozen times and it didn't help me at all with the front turns. The passengers side was easy for me, but the drivers side took me about 30 minutes then I took the battery out. Even the fog lights were easier to switch out and every other light was a piece of cake! But I don't like going under the fender liner because it keeps wanting to fall back into place, removing the bumper is very easy but the plastic rivet/clips are too easy to break.
Replacing the flasher is easy in concept but it's a very awkward position to be in. I could only get one arm under there so doing it all one handed while being cramped makes it hard. Just think how difficult it would be to install resistors to all the turn signals, that gave me reason alone to deal with the flasher replacement. I hope my DIY helps with this, I'll answer any other questions you have if it comes to that but good luck with it!!
