I recently bought a used 2018 Crosstrek Premium. When I was testing the car before buying, I noticed that the power/volume knob on the head unit cause the unit to go into a boot loop. Volume control on the steering wheel isn't affected and I thought I could live without the power/volume knob being functional. Tuning knob causes no problems.

In order to reproduce the problem all that is required is to turn the volume up/down or press the button for power.

This causes the head unit to go into a boot loop for, well, many, many minutes. Holding the power knob down doesn't have any affect on the boot loop. Continuing to fiddle with the volume has no effect on the boot loop. Shutting down the car and waiting for just a few minutes - has no effect on the boot loop. On at least one occasion, shutting down the car and leaving it off over night - had no effect on the boot loop.

I have found that if I press down hard on the power, and then wiggle it around a bit, I can clear the boot loop.
The boot loop will also spontaneously clear if the car is off for longer than 10 minutes, except in the one instance noted above.

Made sure the unit was in the boot loop when I dropped it off and described to the service team member how to recreate the problem. Which, I'm sure, helped in both the diagnostics and resolution.

Bluetooth connection would occasionally disconnect from OnePlus 8T 5G.

I have also had the Starlink 3G to 5G update done in the last week.

The software version was Rel_U1.18.38.50.

So, just out of curiosity, and, because if you don't ask they can't say "Yes!" I took this to the dealership. Mileage was a little over 28K and it might have still been under the 3 year warranty. In a very pleasant surprise, Subaru had already extended the warranty to 2023 and 64K miles - so the HU is covered under warranty.

The dealership updated the software version to Rel_A2.20.07.20 as part of their testing of the issue.

That didn't resolve the issue of the boot loop when the power/volume knob is fiddled with. So, I'm getting a new head unit - under warranty.


Hope this description helps others with a similar problem.
 
Another drive with no volume working on AM/FM. XM was producing sound. Rather than going through a whole restart, just played music from CarPlay. This system is still far more reliable than the Outback infotainment!!!
 
My Fiancé has a 2020 crosstrek she purchased used. The head unit has been giving us a few issues.

Firstly, we are unable to remove the old user. Factory reset and changing the settings seems to continually revert to the old user and we aren't sure why.

Secondly, the CD player does not appear to be able to read discs. It just says Media Loading.

She has also mentioned that occasionally the system responds as though its being interacted with when she isn't touching it.

Has anyone expirienced these issues as well? I tried connecting to wifi but the car says the system is up to date as far as the firmware goes.

Any help would be appreciated.
 
Nearly five years later and CarPlay still drops out after an hour or so. How good are dealerships with replacing the USB port? That's the only variable left.
Mine has started dropping at times, and it is definitely the port. I put brand new cords in and it still does it if I touch the cords inside the console. Looking to get back into a truck again, so I haven’t bothered to take it in.

Would this also fix my remote start fob? I noticed this winter it wouldn’t work, now yesterday my phone don’t connect and the monitor blinks with the Onstar logo. I wonder if they’ll fix this for free since it was a fixed recall?
 
No idea. Instead of getting a new HU though, why wouldn't you get one from a scrapyard, or a scrapyard distributor (LKQ online)? You'll save a few hundred bucks easily. Especially if you get a newer one, you might end up with a better software version.
