Hi,

I am getting my '21 Crosstrek Outdoor trim this Wednesday and I am so eager to change its H11 Low Beams bulbs right away and possibly its High Beams HB3 soon.
planning on putting these:

https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B077BT6M6Z/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A20DLZVH04R37U&psc=1 - H11 Low Beams

made my homework and found this brand is quite promising and always shows on Top 5 or 10 Best LED Headlights.

I did some research in this forums but failed to get the specific answers I'm looking for which are the ff:
1) Does anyone from here have tried those Brand? how was the it?

2) Will it fit with no problems? The unit is built with Fans. (any Flickers or Errors?)

3) Is it safe to just install them on my own? (I have some experience I just don't wanna play smart now then be dumb later lol!)

will greatly appreciate replies with your expertise.

Welcome. Unfortunately
  • They're illegal
  • Their light output, if true is WAY too much (6000 lumens per pair vs. 1200 for an OEM H11. Even a standard D2S HID capsule is ~2300 lumens)
  • They will result in an uneven beam pattern and excessive glare for oncoming traffic. Especially when the headlamp is dirty - you'll really blind drivers who are coming head-on.

There are other options to increase your lighting. Have a look at the post below:

The OP is in Canada but for those in the US thinking of doing the same, take note:

"APPLICATION NOTICE: LED bulbs are legal in the USA for Fog Light use only. Not compliant with DOT / FMVSS108 and not street legal in the USA for Headlights. Legal for off-road use in ATV, snowmobile, and off-road racing use. International legality varies by country. Note: This usage regulation is not unique to Diode Dynamics bulbs. All LED bulbs from all brands, regardless of marketing claims, are prohibited from street use in halogen headlights in the USA."

yes you can replace them yourself as they should be plug & play. @ most you might have to adjust them to put the LED in the right position. if you have big hands it’s tight but doable. I wear 3x gloves & got it done.

if you use those for your high beams your DRLs will flicker as the Trek uses the highs as your Daytime Running Light & alternates the voltage to the halogen to make it “dimmer” the LED bulb doesn’t “dim” & flickers. Currently there is no real work around to disable DRLs or move them to another light (ie. fogs etc) a couple people have managed to do it by building/modding the wiring harness. supposedly these morimoto 2stroke 2.0 are designed to deal with the flicker but I have yet to find a review on them of someone using them in a Trek. My workaround is I just drive with the headlights on all the time. I am currently using a different brand LED.

The first generation Crosstrek you can disable the DRLs by unplugging a part of the harness.

you don’t need those for the low beams. the lows won’t flicker unless they’re cheap crap.

there’s some older threads on here where guys tried different harnesses for the highs.
majority said they didn’t work?
LEDs work bad with the Daytime Running Light system running through the high beams. Disable that, and they work fine as high beams without flicker.

As to the aim...

I really think it came out pretty close to the aim of the factory bulbs.

I have not tried these LEDs. The only reason I'm making this post, is the the high beams can easily be turned off.

I did some research about that LED’s not focus properly on halogen housing. Solution is to install it and adjust the LED pointing on the sides.
That item looks promising. I am looking at the PIAA H11 G3 LED Bulbs unfortunately someone got ahead of me buying the kit from my local store. Gonna take 3-6weeks to pre order. Its pricey but knowing the PIAA brand is kinda reassuring.

In my #8 post, allalighting claims to have 9005 LEDs that work with 6 volts.

Hey guys here is my update: see pictures below

Installed the GTR Lightning ultra 2 on both Low Beams. Result is superb! Way out beyond my expectations. Everything is easy Plug and Play. No adjustments required for they are not blinding the upcoming vehicles. Totally recommending this!

Tron13, your H11 low beams look good. My former posts were about GRT Lightning 2 9005 highs.

As Cutlass wrote, check to see if your high beams are use for DRL. You are in Canada and their regulations may be different from ours.

I have not tried these LEDs. They also claim to work as DRLs.

I have both the h11 and hb3 installed. the low beam headlights are great. beam pattern is amazing and the throw is superb. the hb3 are a little trickier. at DRL, they flicker (still trying to find a fix), but when using high beams, they are phenomenal. Added bonus, if someone cuts you off, those high beams will bring daylight into their cabin. let me know, i can post pictures. overall, great bulbs, easy install, and provide great visibility

Do LEDs as DRLs flicker because the pulse width modulation (PWM) that feeds the DRLs don't allow the LEDs to stay on during the "off" part of the duty cycle? Or is it because the voltage it's being fed is lowered to 6 volts? Is it both? Or is it something else? I thought the thing that connects to the high beams as DRLs was a resistor?

#42 ·
So far as I know, they just aren't designed with the circuit that would allow them to use the lower voltage correctly.

#43 ·
In this thread my posts #29 and #30 have emitters that claim to work as DRLs. Check with the companies as I have not tried these 9005 LEDs.

#46 ·
I believe the Morimoto 2Stroke 2.0s are built to work as a DRL & high beam then there’s a plug in adapter (if needed) for canbus errors.

unfortunately I have yet to see anyone using these in a Trek yet. there was a thread a while ago about these being a possibility though but no one had tried them.

AstroKats is correct, "they are illegal".
That being said, you'll never be pulled over for a modification that doesn't dazzle the eyes of the police. Keep the rays of light out of other driver's windows for the lows. Use color temperature up to 6,000K. Good luck.

The DD headlights can be adjusted so as to not be worse blinding oncoming drivers than regular bulbs. But it's not that easy to do.

My Wife has a Limited (LED) and I have a Sport (Halogen), while her lights look whiter, they don't look brighter. The LEDs also have a smaller light pattern with a hard cut-off line at the top which is worse on unlit roads at night. I had a 21 Forester with LEDs and have never missed them. I really like LEDs in many applications, just not headlights. Save your money. Side by side comparison lined up so the tops of the light beams would be even.

I have the Morimoto 2Stroke 3.0 bulbs in 4 of my cars. 2001 Forester, 2001 Miata, 2013 Crosstrek and 2019 Impreza. Two are projector lenses and two are reflector. I've tried dozens of LED bulbs over the years but most are poorly made and blind oncoming traffic. So far these, when properly clocked, have the best cutoff and have the added bonus of venting the heatsink air inside the headlamp assembly. Unlike the other bulbs that vent outside these will help keep snow from freezing to the lens if you live where this is an issue. With these I have not had an issue needing a resistor in line. Depending on the vehicle I've had the High Beam either lock on or the high beam indicator not light up with other brands.

I have them in the high and low beams in my 2019 Impreza because the high beams aren't used for the DRL's, there are separate assemblies for that, instead of fogs the sport has DRL's . So flicker is not an issue.

Another reason I got the Morimoto is they claim to work in the high beams that are used as a DRL, sensing voltage and going dimmer. For me I found this was not the case, I worked with the vendor trying various fixes in line but nothing worked. I tried high beams in our 2013 Outback. I have no idea if it would work with my Impreza since I don't have high beam used as DRL's . I only put them in the low beams in the Crosstrek and my other vehicles are too old to have DRL's plus one is a Hi/Lo in the same bulb (Forester)

I really liked the DD SL1's I had at one time in my Impreza low beams but the Morimoto's while maybe not as bright, have the internal heat vent which I like.

My understanding why DOT will not approve the bulbs for headlamps is there are so many poorly designed cheap ones and they don't have the time to test them all they just won't allow them. I was in the, no way you can get an LED bulb to work in an assembly that was not designed for it camp, for a very long time. I kept trying them though and finally found a set that really does work well and will not blind oncoming traffic. Having said that it there are a lot of headlamp designs and until you test in your application you really won't know.

Been a while since I viewed this thread.

Did you try them in the Crosstrek high beam/ DRL? I have a 2016 and it seems to work (with a few quirks).
