If anyone cares, the way the system works is that when the shifter is in park, a long rod that rides inside the shifter makes contact with a microswitch at the base of the shifting mechanism. Thumping the shifter straight down would probably be the most effective way to "jiggle" a fussy switch. The same bracket also holds the switch for the manual shifting mode.

The only way to permanently resolve this issue with all the original safety mechanisms in place is to replace the plate the switch is mounted in as described above, or have the dealer deal with it.

I have the same problem with the Subaru XV… intermittent.. jiggle the shifter to park start the car again turn it off. Wait.. once the battery went totally flat… not willing to take it to the dealer. They don’t know what to do. I’m considering putting a battery isolator cable under the bonnet and using a second key to lock the doors and leave the key in the ignition with the battery disconnected until I can solve this mindnumbing problem.
