Intermittent A/C problem

Hi all,

Australia, XV MY19 Premium

a weird A/C problem, sometimes whilst driving w Climate Control on full auto, it now seems hot in the car - hmm - a/c not working.

Initial solutions seemed to be:-

Pull over and turn the car off and restart.
or
Press MAX A/C - that seems to "kickstart" the A/C

Yesterday I was in the car updating the head unit maps etc. - sun out - outside temp 21C, full auto, set at 23c.
Hmm .. it's darn hot in here, air from vents seems quite warm. Change temp to 19C, nothing changes.

Step outside of car - gee, this is much cooler .
Go into house and get a thermometer - measure air from front vents - 29c !!
Press MAX A/C - A/C kicks in, temperature drops - turn off MAX A/C - all is ok for while ( temp slowly rises ).
Hold thermometer to front vents - stop when front vent temp in about 3 minutes reaches 32C - I unfortunately forgot to check if it was recirc or fresh but would not have expected such a rise even it it was recirc !

Now, this issue is intermittent, it has been logged at the dealer a while ago ( so when it is still outstanding after the warranty expires I have 1/2 a chance of getting it fixed ) but of course every time it's checked by the dealer it is deemed to be ok - usually the dealer service dept has been helpful, so , for the moment, I believe them.

Any thoughts ?, I thought a faulty A/C clutch or relay, but then MAX A/C would not change that.
Perhaps an intermittent temp sensor in the cabin ? - and MAX A/C just turns on the A/C, overriding the internal temp sensor ?

or is there some TSB about for this ? ( does anyone have an Australia TSB site for Subaru ? )

Cheers,
Ray

If you can adjust the temperature setpoint, then your A/C compressor does not have a magnetic clutch and relay. Instead the compressor is variable output with a swash plate controlled by a solenoid. The compressor always spins when the engine is running. Only the base models with manual A/C have a clutch and relay.

There are no TSB's by SOA regarding your issue. Sorry this doesn't solve your problem.

Hi, have you monitor the car's voltage before? I have similar issues like you before when the ecm cuts out the alternator while driving and voltages goes as low as 12.1 to 12.2v.

When this happens the compressor does not cycle on and off properly. When it cycle off there was a long delay in cycling on again resulting in the ac blowing warm air during the moment...

No, haven't had the need to, but it does seem to mimic the issue.

** Update ** FInally Dealer finds 2 issues
1. slightly low on refrigerant, so tops up and adds UV dye - will go back in a few weeks to see where the leak is.
2. A relay was intermittent - none in stock < sighs> - so will get fitted when I go back to get item 1 ( refrigerant ) checked.

Not sure which relay it was - I'm still a bit confused as to why "Max A/C" then worked OK - but not concerned enough to source and trace a wiring diagram ;) - oh well, provided it all get sorted out.
