High-pitch noise passenger side

I am a new owner of a 2021 Crosstrek. With only 2800 KM on the meter, I was surprised when I started hearing a high pitch noise cominng from the passenger side. It is not the fan motor or the AC, since I hear the noise when I turn these off. I hear this anoying noise when driving at low speed, after the engine has warmed. I went to see the dealer for this problem and, of course, the repair does not hear the noise... FYI, I live in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, so in winter, temperature goes from 10 above zero to minus 30 C.

What to do? Do other owners have heard this noise ?

Even with the lady chatting away, the noise is still pretty clear !

I have seen the threads on the subject, but it seems to be about 2018-2019 models having issues with the blower fan. The repair told me they had fixed this issue on the 2021 version (but who knows?). Again, I am pretty sure it is an engine issue since it comes and goes and doesn't stop with the fan or AC being shut off... And no, the crossbars are not on. I have them in storage, and when I install them in a couple months, I will be sure to tie a stretch cord around the front bar to obliterate the hissing sound (trick I learnt with my Volkswagen Wagon at the time)...

When this happens try adjusting things in the cabin. Turn the air damper through all the settings, turn on defroster, turn on/off radio but turn volume all the way down/mute. Turn on dome lights and seat heaters etc. Also try just cracking each window just enough to release any air pressure that may be building inside.

Make sure the engine air intake box is properly sealed as well as the cabin air filter inside the glove box

If its an electrical noise/hum you may interrupt (change frequency) by loading the system.

If its air noise you may disturb the flow by switching the damper around, cracking window etc.

Same issue as here (listen to the videos): Model Year 2018 and Newer - Noise coming from passenger side

Unfortunately no fix so far. Affects a number of crosstreks.

Can you let us know what your dealership finds out?
Good to know... I definetely will follow up. My dealership wasn't helpful, but I will continue pushing until they find out what it is and fix it. The manager suggested it was a normal injection noise, but it can't be normal. It also seems to affect recent Crosstreks, so time should tell. Just hoping to figure it out before the warranty expires. Cheers.

Hey guys,

Just jumped into this thread to share some info.

Wife's 2021 xtrek sport started making this noise and my deal (Mark Miller) in SLC found it to be the "Cam Driven Fuel Pump".
My dealer also replaced the blower motor. They just found it to be the fuel pump after having the car for 3 days. Its a 4 day wait on the part, and takes a day to install according to my dealer.
But we are taking the car on vacation so they don't have time to install before we leave. So when we get back, we are taking it back to have them install the new pump.

Our experience was the same as everyone else's, starts after driving for a few miles and the vehicle is warmed up. Can only really hear it when you come to a stop.
One of the "tests" I did to know it wasn't the blower motor was putting the vehicle in neutral or park while its making the noise and revving the engine. The pitch changes with the revvs which led me to believe it wasn't the BM. I also shut the fans off completely and the noise still persisted.

I will update when the new pump is on and we drive the car around a few times to verify. This issue has been bothering my wife for a while now, glad we might have a potential answer to the problem.

I am going to try higher octane fuel while we are driving this week and see if that will shut it up for a while. I'll update with that information as well.

I have the same issue as others have posted now... The weather is starting to get warmer here in Ontario so it will be a bit harder to actually figure out what it is. When I took it into the dealership, they said it was the "lifters" and it's under warranty. Inspires confidence...

I'll probably try again next winter or whenever the temps drop.

I have a new 2021 Crosstrek and it too has a variable high pitched sound in the engine when I accelerate and decelerate. It's so annoying I have to turn up my radio! I have always had Toyotas and switched. I am so unhappy with this 2021 Crosstrek. Even when I am in traffic and accelerate, the car acts like its about to stall. DOES ANYONE ELSE HAVE THESE PROBLEMS? I know when I take it in for its first check up, they will claim they can't hear it :(

this is good to know! When I say that lemoning the car is the plan, I mean just taking necessary steps to document it all so that if I have to go that route, I have what I need. I would prefer it just end up being a simple repair like resetting the computer or a battery, coil pack. But if it ends up being the transmission next time it happens, I am not getting stuck with this car.

The main reason I complained to them at this point is because the tech admitted he didn’t do what was required to get the car to show the behavior. They said they didn’t have time and that they just had it idle and briefly drove it around on the streets nearby. Which I get, but tell me that and I’ll come in and try to set up the conditions. Dude was super dismissive of me when I brought it in.

Hopefully, you get it solved because you only had the car for a short while and it's starting to give you problems. Must be really upsetting for you to be dealing with this on a brand new car.
Thank you! I’m not as upset about that as I am about the poor service from that one tech. I love my car, just want them to hear me out and not dismiss my concerns like I’m some girl who doesn’t know anything. I look younger than I am too, so this happens a lot like when I get quotes on yard/property service & stuff like that LOL. But my car salesmen guy is an angel and set this appt up and talked to the new tech for me, that’s all I’m asking for at this point.
