Do you have an auto-dimming mirror or old school?

I've been wondering about this for a while now, but did anybody - besides me - opt to have the "old school" rear view mirror in their XV? You know, the one where you manually have to flip it in order to not be blinded by the traffic behind you? :D

I ordered my Crosstrek and opted to sacrifice the compass (which I wanted) and go with the old school manual mirror since any and all automatic dimming mirrors I've ever had the misfortune to use just don't dim well enough (or soon enough) for me. My XV's dash lights are practically off - they're as low as you can make them - so I'm guessing my eyes are pretty sensitive to light. lol

Anyway, I'm just curious if others have the basic mirror as well and for what reason? It seems my area dealers always include the auto dimming mirrors on every single XV on their lots!

I've got the basic mirror as well. Since I never like to have the mirror dimmed in any car I'm driving, the autodim would've been a huge headache for me (I've driven cars with them and I still don't like my mirror dimmed).

The only time I touch my mirror is after my wife's driven the XV and I need to adjust it back to my height. Funny thing is my wife is the same way; neither of us dim the mirrors in any car we drive (and yes we drive at night, not just daylight).

Mine came with the auto-dimming mirror. I wouldn't have sought it out. However, after using it, I've come to appreciate it. Like the OP, I keep all my dash lights dim (can't see them in daylight if I forget to kill the headlights during the day), but the dimming mirror performs well enough for me to be happy with it.

This is the first car I've had with the auto-dimming mirror. I've never felt the need for one and honestly won't seek it out in my next vehicle.

Auto dimming is an absolute must. An auto dim mirror in dim mode has MUCH better visibility than a manual mirror in dim mode.
It's a completely different process. One uses a liquid. One has two mirrors. The prior offers much more accurate optics.

I had considered getting the auto dimming but after having my car for a while, don't see the need. Maybe it's the heavy tinted rear glass or the ride height or a combination, but have never had to flip the lever from the lights behind me being too bright. My previous Pontiac I wished I had auto dimming for sure, but so far, not so much in the XV. I would however like the compass though.

Good grief. I can't believe the number of people who don't dim their manual mirrors when driving! I'd be blind if I didn't. Eyes of steel you all must have! Heck, I'll even adjust my side mirrors to get away from the glare if I'm traveling for a long distance on the interstate at night.

My XV came equipped with the old school, manual flip mirror. My last three cars came equipped with the auto dimming rearview mirror and I at times miss this feature. My initial thought was that with factory tinted glass, I would not miss a mirror dimming automatically. I was wrong. I would like to purchase an auto dimming rearview mirror in the future but want to purchase a few other accessories first.

Mine came with the auto dim mirror and I took the one out of my former Baja that had homelink and auto dim and put it in this car. And yes I do have the home link programmed ;)

Mine came with it. My Mini didn't have one (it only came with some $1500 package on the Mini) and I didn't really notice or care. I'm actually more jazzed about the Homelink so I can eliminate the garage door remote. I have the WORST garage door remote. It will be nice to toss that in the trash.

Tonight was the first time i got to use the auto dimming that came with my car. It was cool enough. My previous car had dark tint on the back window, so i never really used the manual flip much, but the XVs tint is lighter, so the dimmer is nice to have imo.

I have a gentex mirror with a backup cam monitor and compass built into it and it is also auto dimming. Got it for the monitor feature - the auto dimming was just part of the package. I must say the dimming works very well and would recommend it though it is certainly not a necessary feature, but it is way more necessary than say, auto windshield wipers. :)

Yes, I did the install myself and it works very well. The monitor is completely invisible until it comes on and when it comes on the display is sharp, clear, and bright. It is pricey though at around $600-650 for the parts. The Gentex is a quality product - they make oem mirrors for major car manufacturers.

Here is a link to one thread where I mentioned the install. The thread also contains a link to a site with very helpful instruction if you DIY.

Don't all XVs sold in the States come with an auto dimming rear-view mirror because of the mandatory "Premium package"? The first vehicle I've ever owned in 25yrs of vehicle ownership that had an auto dimming mirror was my leased 2012 Subaru Legacy 2.5i CVT Premium. Funny thing with the Legacy was it came with the standard mirror in a plastic bag in the trunk. Apparently the auto dimming / compass setup is distribution center installed. My XV didn't come with a loose standard mirror.

Regardless, I completely don't get why someone would WANT to swap out their auto dimmer to a standard mirror? The standard flip ones feel like something from the dollar store and every time you touch it, you move it out of adjustment because of the "quality" of the whole assembly.

Auto dimmer all the way.

Control. I know I like to be in control of my car. I like to control when the headlights are on or off, when my doors lock, when my car shifts (I'm a manual driver). Having the car do everything for me makes me lazy or forgetful.

I've gotten used to the auto dimmer... And i really don't spend too much time looking in the rear view. But i can completely understand why someone would hate it. Ymmv!
