Potato or avocado or whatever, it's honestly a little sad that so few cars have really distinct visual character anymore. They're all designed in wind tunnels now, which takes a lot of the fun out of it.

I miss the days of cars like the Bigeye Sprite, where you couldn't help but visualize that the car had a personality.

And of course, the early 2000s Imprezas and WRXs were called bigeyes, too:
I never cared for that design. Reminded me too much of the Dodge Neon. HI!

I dunno ... I'd say that automotive aesthetics in general peaked back in the 50s ...
You must be older than me. That was before my time.

IMO, the peak was late 60's. The worst was late 70's with the fugly styling of the "glamor coupes" and their opera windows. Just look how Ford butchered the styling of the Thurderbird and Cougar compared to what it was before.

lol ... before my time, too, but at least this discussion is making me feel old! ;)

When I was a kid my grandfather still drove an old 1956 Caddy with big tail fins -- one of them was actually hinged, and you had to lift up the fin to access the gas cap underneath. I thought that car was the coolest thing ever, and it's probably left me jaded for every vehicle I've seen since.

The earliest car I remember in our family was a 1961 Buick Invicta:

It had the same bullet front as the same vintage T-bird which I thought was cool:
