Windshield replacement (after failed repair) cost in Canada?

Earlier this year, I had a small chip in my windshield just behind the rearview mirror so it wasn't noticeable to me until I did my first car wash of the year. Seeing that I got a chip, I found a nice deal on a chip repair from a local collision chain ($17 for 3 chips and the $17 goes to the local children's hospital) in an effort to stop the windshield from cracking.

Seeing that I had time yesterday, I took my car in and was promptly informed that they do the drill out the broken glass and then fill method of chip repair. With this method, there's a 5% chance that a crack will develop during the repair. 5%... what are the chances right? Well, as it turns out pretty darn good. I now have about a foot long (30 cm) crack in the middle of my windshield so I need to look for a replacement.

So far, one of the local dealers quoted me $617 for just the windshield and rubber seal with another $147 for labour + taxes and such which to me seemed nuts. Then I went to a local well reviewed independent glass place who looked up the model and glass and quoted me $517 for cheapest 3rd party glass (just the glass) which is nuts - btw according to YELP, they are typically $100 or so cheaper than others. I also got a quote from a major glass chain which was a more reasonable $440 + tax but still some what nuts.

Anyone in Canada had their windshield replaced at a reasonable price?

I don't know about has to be replaced by OEM... according to the parts.subaru.com site, all OEM windshields fit all models (ie there are about 6 of them listed that will fit a 2013). So, if you want better soundproofing then, you can see if a soundproofing 3rd party one is available. After talking with some shops, different 3rd party suppliers will list different windshields being available - at least one supplier didn't have any soundproofed ones for a XV but they did have one for the same model year Impreza.

Cars with Eyesight may have other considerations. Such as the requirement of an OEM Subaru windshield and the possible recalibration of the Eyesight system...which isn't cheap. If you have Eyesight make sure the installers don't bump it or touch it in anyway.
