My 2 cents worth!

Seems to be a whole bunch of information on fuels what they do, etc available on the internet, from manufacturers and fuel companys.

My son is a Mazda mechanic, he recommends high octane fuel. Reason, burns cleaner and you get better milage.

My Subaru service department recommends high octane. Reason, burns cleaner and you get better milage.

My experience with all my subaru has been to use high octane when ever I can get it. I have never noticed any performance increase but certainly have noticed way better milage.

Bottom line is I will be sticking with Scooby and only running 98.

Yeah, I agree with all the premium 95 or 98 users. My son has been telling me for years that the petrol in Australia is crap compared to Europe and other countries. If you want to have a longer engine life don't put crap in it and use premium fuels. My son goes further to say BP is the best, followed by Caltex (non woolworths though). I could really notice the difference if I put BP 95 in my old liberty..ZZOOOOM. I reserve the 98 for a fill up on an occasional basis to clean. My hubby recently put 98 in his Holden Commodore- my god what a difference in power!!!! The extra cost will be offset by longer trouble free engine life and an enjoyable driving experience. :)

Yes I agree - the manual states an interesting comment regarding type of fuel to use. Cannot remember it exactly at present but I will look it up tonight and post it here for all to read. It said that 91RON is ok and the engine will work fine on that fuel however it went on to suggest, rather tongue in cheek, that 95 or even 98RON would be better etc. I have filled up with Shell 95RON as the pumps for 98 were being serviced and I think that's the minimum I would use. I saw the price difference between 91 to 95 was approx 7cents/lt and then 91 to 98 was approx 12cents in the metro area of Brisbane.

Is the price difference the same in other states? So for argument sake if you filled up and it took say 50L it would be an extra $3.50 for 95 and an extra $6 for 98 over an above the 91 price. Not too bad considering the price of a fuel additive from any auto parts store! Stay tuned for more info tonight!

To get really confused on gas type and the differences see

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Octane_rating

I'd like to draw your attention to the chart and the discussion note at the bottom United States

What the chart does not really discuss is the disipation (sp) rate of methanol/ethanol. What hapens inside your gas tank after a day a week et al. Is the gas still 91 95 or 98 or is it something less. Especially given note number 16 at the bottom of the chart (follow link for a synopsis of report)

Most interesting topic. When I first got my XV, the first two tanks were 91RON then I'd decided to try 98RON and immediately noticed the difference in the extra kilometres I get. 98RON is what will be going into my XV for as long as I have it.

M8 can you tell me the average prices you pay for petrol in SA? In Brisbane it's around $1.35/L for 91 RON and 11c more for 95 RON ($1.46/L) and then another 5-6c a litre for 98 RON ($1.51-52/L).

So if you fill your tank with an avg. 60L it adds approx $6.60 (95) or $9.60 (98) over the price of Std 91 fuel so now I have to work out how many more Klms you get from a tank of better fuel to compare it to the increased cost you pay. In theory you should be ahead......

I hate this thread it gets me so WIRED, use what ever fuel you like but don't try and sugarcoat your opinions with bull S....! SHOW ME THE EVIDENCE! I have done the tests (performance and economy) and the higher RON fuel have only tiny benefits to performance and economy. I concede that you have to use higher RON fuel in states where 91 is not available and you cannot use E10 in the XV. I should stay away from this for my own blood pressure.lol

The figures you quoted is very similar to what we pay here in Adelaide, give or take 0.02 cent.

Hi Debath,
Don't let it get to you. :D

Bottom line is that you can run "your" car on whatever makes "you" happy. A whole bunch of stats and figures will probably never change that.

mm first tank is free.. so 2nd should I use 60lt of carrot juice or 60lt of apple juice??? :D:D

I usually run better on Single Malt than I do on blended...

Here in Canada premium unleaded is at least 10% more than regular unleaded fuel. So unless your fuel economy increased by the same factor, then it is a waste of money using premium. I read somewhere, (I have not been able to find it again) that a car designed to run on the lower octane ratings, will not burn the premium fuel as efficiently so more pollutants will be going out the exhaust pipe.

Just use the highest number of octane u can buy in your country
The higher the better
I always use 98 octane
Wish we had 100 octane here at my local pump I would use it
