Are there any alternatives to VxDiag, because I tried to order this for my 2017 XV, but there is only shipping from China, which costs more than the device itself...
I haven't found any alternatives. The factory tool costs thousands. The VxDiag is far from perfect but it helped me out. I think shipping was about $70.

One more question, since the topic is inconclusive... Using VxDiag, can you program TPMS or not? Because I have 2 wheel sets, so when the summer comes I don't know how to deal with summer wheels, since the closest dealer is 350km away :(

None that I’m aware of, but I haven’t looked online lately. If you find an alternative I don’t think it’s likely you’ll find anyone documenting it actually working. AFAIK I was the first person to try vxdiag and post it for Subaru but I could be mistaken.

You can buy the vxdiag hardware on Amazon and then buy the software upgrade for Subaru. Don’t know how the cost compares but wouldn’t take long to look in to.

Edit: you could ask if you could buy it on Amazon and have them deauthorize the included licenses and have them charge you the difference for Subaru. They were pretty responsive when I emailed them; worth asking.

I bought Vxdiag, received it yesterday... did everything according to instructions, but keep getting an error: "Communication initialization failed".
vxdiag manager sees the connection, all LEDs on diag are glowing, but I can't connect...
their support is pretty bad... maybe someone here had similar issue?

This is an interesting thread, and I hope to learn more about this tool.

I was a longtime VW enthusiast, and we DIY aficionados of the VW family -- VW, Audi, Seat, et al -- had a great tool called VCDS (formerly VAG-COM), made by Ross-Tech, located in Pennsylvania, which consisted of a USB-OBD2 cable and a software program for Windows. I saved myself a lot of time and money adapting replacement keys, doing diagnostics, running readiness tests, changing the instrument panel clock to 24 hours, etc., way beyond what a generic scan tool could do. Ross-Tech's web site has a great amount of information on reading and interpreting data, instructions on various procedures, code lookups, etc.

Since becoming a Subaru owner I've been looking for something with similar functions.

Try this....

I did what they describe and it works great. Full SSM4. I bought this........

This has been a fascinating post and I am grateful to all who have shared information.

I am a collision reconstructionist and I am wondering if you could help me out with a couple of questions regarding this tool?

One, will it talk to the airbag system? Under "All other models" --> "Each System Check" --> "Airbag System" --> May have to hit 'OK' --> "Event Record Data". Do you make it here without errors? What do you see? If your car hasn't been in any collisions, you shouldn't see anything there. I am curious if this tool can be used to retrieve black box data (i.e. the Event Data Recorder).

Two, for those of you with Eyesight systems, does this log real-time Eyesight parameters like the distance from the target?

And lastly, what software are you using to log massive amounts of real-time data to CSV?

Three questions...sorry!

Awesome stuff here.

Thanks already,

Shawn
Not very likely you are still interested in this, but thought id post it in case you or others might be interested. I was in a front impact collision. Not severe enough to trigger any airbags or seatbelt tensioners, but the EDR did log. Here is a YouTube video of it: Subuaru EDR- 2014 Impreza/XV

Sorry to revive an old thread, but it has been an interesting read.
Does this setup ssm + vxdiag allow for reprogramming of a 2nd hand instrument cluster to another car?
I have bought a 2nd hand one cluster which is a model up from mine (same connector and pins) but since it is out of a different car, my car won't start due to the immobiliser not being mated to the rest of my vehicles modules.
With this tool, am I able to sync it to my car? I have my original one as well.

I am afraid I don't know the answer to that. Some years need a "teaching code" at a minimum. You could definitely enter immobilizer mode.. but I never played with it beyond that due to the potential major costs associated with it not going well. What I can say as a fact though: my 2014 Impreza allowed any cluster to be installed when a remote start immobilizer bypass was used that was setup to activate with ignition on via a relay (relay needed to provide a ground signal to the immobilizer bypass activate input signal).

Thanks DallasJW. I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place. Not getting any dealer help here so I need to try and figure this out on my own. I can try the ssm + vxdiag which is probably going to cost me close to $800 all up OR I can try and desolder the EEPROM out of my original and solder it onto the new one, but I'm scared I'll break the gauge needles. /shrugs

I was just given a 2011 Outback. I was told the VDC was back by the shop so I swapped it with one from the junk yard but now I received code c0045 Incorrect VDC ControlModule specification. Does anyone know if this tool can reprogram the ecu with the new VDC? I download the software and I saw a reprogram option and then under it it says reprogram VDC (BZR only). I just want to make sure it can also reprogram and outback.

Thanks for any info.
