I ran into these two threads today on other boards. They are about the same car - an 2013 Impreza - but from two different angles - the tuner and the tunee.

Delicious Tuning Dyno Tuned 2012+ FB20 Impreza 2.0i / XV CrossTrek w/ EcuTeK - Subaru Impreza GC8 & RS Forum & Community: RS25.com <- Tuner

('11-'14) 2013 Impreza Tune - NASIOC <- tunee.

Here's the summary of the observations from the tuner -

Figures are based on California 91 Octane Fuel for Manual Transmissions
Peak Horsepower Increase: +5-10 wheel horsepower (depends on fuel, 87-93 octane)
Peak Torque Increase: +5-6 wheel torque (depends on fuel, 87-93)
Maximum Horsepower Gains: +10-13 wheel horsepower @ 6000 RPM
Maximum Torque Gains: +12-15 wheel torque @ 2500 RPM
Torque Dip Removed: +700 RPM's of usable power added (3700-4400 dip removed)

Notable Improvements in drivabilty
Adaptable Tune Based on Octane
Little to NO torque dip in the power band
Improved Acceleration
Smoother Power Delivery
Better Throttle Response
Linear Power Curve
Maintained MPG

From the tunees perspective I reckon the description is right but we have smooth power to 6k. Dragon hates me stretching its neck like that...but it is a redline!

Different tuner for ours. See my threads if you need any info. Love our xv now just need better seats

The conservative factory tuning of vehicles often means it is possible to add power without changing fuel economy. In several cases fuel economy even improves. It all depends on how the stock tune is set up and how the aftermarket tune is built. You have to remember that aftermarket tuners often have a lot of room to work with since they can build a tune with power/fuel economy in mind. Auto manufacturers have to build tunes that comply with the laws in the markets that the vehicle will be sold in as a first priority. After that they can prioritize power/fuel economy.

With that said, some tunes will consume more fuel than a stock tune. It really depends on what the tuner does to add power versus what the factory tune is doing.

OK, I can see that pollution emissions can adversely affect performance tuning, but considering how much emphasis there is on fuel efficiency these days, I still find it hard to believe that manufacturers would not do their utmost to (within those limits) tune for fuel economy - bearing in mind their "returns".

Are you effectively saying that you can *illegally* tune your car for better performance?

Remove the catalytic converters and you'll probably see decent performance gains on the XV (at least extra HP and Ft. Lbs). I wouldn't use the term "illegal" because you definitely run this setup on a track. However, the car wouldn't pass inspection for street use, and it could be impounded as a result.

There is nothing illegal about tuning the car for better performance as long as the the car meets the required state inspections. Nobody would even know the car was tuned anyway. If you failed SMOG emissions they won't look at you and say "hey you tuned your car!". It doesn't register on the emissions machine that the car has a tune. It will void warranties with Subaru if you have them still though.

Anyway, I agree with others about the mild gains. $250 is just the tune correct? So the handheld device is usually another $400 or something? Maybe this one is different, but the cost involved for 5whp just isn't worth it. I'd like to see the mpg changes, and if no changes at least mention that mpg did not change. My opinion is that this car is not designed for speed...period. If people are so concerned about pulling an extra 5whp out of the car, this is just not the car for you. It's hard having this little power after coming from well probably most other cars ha. It's definitely the slowest car I've ever owned and I feel everybody's pain who steps on the gas and just doesn't go. After a short ramble...I just don't see the bang for buck in this with the results being so small for a higher price.
