Side mirror defogger / defrost?

Yesterday was my first frosty morning in my new 2016 Crosstrek. It includes a rear window defroster, heated wiper blade area on the front windshield, and the side mirrors have build in heating elements. I assumed that all of these activate by simply pressing the defrost button in the center console. (The manual certainly implies this.) Doing so activates the rear window defroster, but apparently nothing else. The side mirrors have icons for the defrost indicator, however these do not illuminate when the defrost button is pressed. I assume that they should illuminate when activated. I saw frost evaporating from the rear window, but that is all.

Anyone with a 2016 Premium or Limited, or anyone with the winter package, do you see the icons on the side mirror illuminate when you press the defrost button? I suspect this is malfunctioning on my new Crosstrek but would appreciate insights from anyone who has one that is known to be working correctly. Thank you!

Mods, please move this thread if it belongs in either the Problems or Electrical forum.

Side mirror defrost power is activated with the REAR window Defroster button...,and I like the fact it is simply not just another random button specifically for the side mirrors, I know took me awhile to catch onto that, but the thinking is the rear window grid doesn't take very long to thaw out,so side mirrors Will Not need to be powered very long.

I agree that it would be nice to have the rear defrost activate when the auto start is on... it would also be nice if the car would remain on when you open the doors too!

For me, being an part-time/paid-on-call firefighter, I don't have time to warm the car up when the pager goes off, so for extra help I have been using Aquapel on my windshield and it makes a world of difference not only when driving, but when it comes to clearing ice and snow off too. I also use Rain-X washer fluid to maintain the beading effect.
I also have Rain-X De-Icer in a spray bottle for when I get fire calls and have to run to the station on a frosty morning, it saves the wipers from the extra scraping across frost and light ice.

I know we have beaten this one to death for some of you new folks on here the application of Collinite 845 to the body ( I did mine just prior to the winter temps we are currently having out in BC)

It is available for those of us in Canada, from

Collinite Liquid Insulator Wax - Caswell Canada

Fantastic product, ice/snow simply DON'T STICK to your ride, makes for much quicker starts to work in the cold am's IMHO

"This Product HAS BEEN TROUTBUM APPROVED "

From the 2016 user manual:

To activate the defogger and deicer system, press the control switch that is located on the climate control panel. The rear window defogger, outside mirror defogger and windshield wiper deicer are activated simultaneously. The indicator light on the control switch illuminates while the defogger and deicer system is activated. To turn them off, press the control switch again.

Now I understand why there is so much confusion about the defrost symbol on the side mirrors lighting up because I remember seeing a Subaru brochure out there that shows that mirror symbol illuminated.

When I was looking for my 2014 there were brochures with interior pictures of a sliding cup holder, nice padded arm rests, engine cover and the color MFD. That stuff wasn't even an option.

There's a very cool site called auto-brochures.com, that archives PDF copies of each year's full set of brochures from major car manufacturers ... a car geek can spend hours there. Just out of curiosity, I pulled up the 2014 Crosstrek brochure, and as best I can tell the photos in it are all completely accurate. (There's one photo of a center console MFD, but only on the Hybrid page, which of course did have an MFD.)
