This thread is all about the Head Unit (HU) on the new MY18 XV Crosstrek..
Do you have a question, a problem or issues with it?...post here.

I mostly like the HU in the new XV, and I love Apple Play.
But I cannot stand/detest/hate that you cannot permanently turn off the audio!
As soon as you turn on the car, the radio starts blaring. If the last thing you used was Bluetooth, then that starts blaring. The only way around that is to remember to turn the sound down to zero before you turn off the car.
Also, when you're using Apple Play and you've turned off whatever you've been listening to by touching the screen...as soon as you turn off the car, the radio starts blaring again!
Also, the audio does not stop when you turn off the car...you physically have to open the door for it to stop, or reach over and turn off the button.
This HU is different from the previous models, which used to remember when you turned off the audio...so when you restart the car, the audio was already off. This one, with the audio permanently on, is driving me crazy!

Not being able to turn it off is very odd. Granted, I almost always have music playing, but still, having to use the volume to turn the noise "off" rather than just an on/off control is not optimal.

I dislike it when a passenger iPhone is plugger into charge at the front USBs (the easy access ones) and the HU disconnected Bluetooth from my phone that was playing music and demands apple car play and refuses anything else.

I dislike the way it vocalises "towards" when gpsing.

Idislike that the GPS map autozoom is very needy. I can't have autozoom enabled in menu and during driving adjust a particular scale and make it stay there. After a few seconds it reverts to Auto.

The touchscreen may become unresponsive if you do things too quick. Like typing too quick or dragging the map around too quick.

LOL yes! She says "two wads" instead of towards. At first our family giggled but it got irritating really quickly.
Oddly enough I use Android Auto and it always defaults to Map mode when I'd rather it defaulted to Spotify because I usually know where I'm going <eyeroll>.
I've discovered when the HU touchscreen/Android Auto becomes non responsive that using voice commands via the "Talk" button on the steering wheel sets it straight again.
In GPS mode she often tells me "I can't help you with that right now" but then the mapping and directions slowly begin loading and it comes good. It is said "patience is a virtue". I'm ever so virtuous now.

The night I purchased mine, I had an issue with the BT connection between my phone and the HU. I had it in the accessory position, connected my phone and began music. Upon starting it up, the HU said the phone was still connected, but the phone did not show any connections. Couldn't "disconnect" the phone on the HU, delete it, anything. Couldn't reconnect the phone. Ended up doing a factory data reset on the HU, hasn't happened since.

I've also noticed that when I have any audio playing via BT, there is a constant ticking noise. It doesn't happen in my girlfriend's Honda, or with my BT headphones, and it does not matter what the audio input is (music on the phone, pandora, etc.).

The HU and my handset did that repeatedly, until I finally nuked/repaved my handset with Android Nougat. It's be really good ever since.

Sure it is a typo and the OP meant "and it works great now."

HU has been ok so far ( 13 days ) re freezing/weird things but does become slow to respond when you select things at a "normal" speed.

Annoyances ....

Media-USB artist/album selection insisting on sorting Alphabetically on MP3 tags even though I've named the files 01_1st track.mp3, 02_2ndtrack.mp3 etc.
This can be solved by putting a playlist in each album folder and just selecting playlists ( you do then lose the artist/album selection )

DEbsXV issue with the radio insisting on being turning on when you stop , or start, the car. If it was on USB at vol3, I want it to start up there, or stay at least quiet until I decide otherwise. Don't select radio at X volume automatically.

It would be nice if you could turn Navigation audio prompts off and just use prompts on the screen/info display. Even turning the Nav volume to zero still interrupts the music when it wants to say something. I know roughly where I'm going, just prompt me on the screen when the turn is coming up.

Otherwise a very nice car :)

You can turn off nav audio prompts. Tap the nav screen, on the right there are three buttons placed vertically. The centre one, an image of a speaker, is mute if you press it.

I love being able to mute it.

DebsXV - i have to declare that i absolutely LOVE the fact the music keeps playing when you've turned off the car, but are yet to get out... Feel like that's finesse and is hopefully built by design as have found it to be very convenient.

On the contrary yes, the volume factor and not being able to turn it off by choice - so even though a workaround is to set it to zero volume when you stop the car, if you were playing Pandora (back when it existed in AUS), and got back in the car - you then come to realise it's back to playing via the phone in your pocket as soon as you start the car.
#Facepalm

Can't think of any other pain points at this stage now that i've gotten used to where everything is - thanks to guidance above, for instance, how to stop the GPS voice and its vocal guidance 'TOWADS' the destination.

Weird little bug...if I plug in my phone before I start the car, it goes into a loop where it's trying to connect to a bluetooth device, fails, and tries to connect again. Android Auto won't function properly as a result. If I turn the car on and then plug in my phone, no issues. Talked to the service guys and they're looking into it as a possible bug for Subaru to fix.

I had an aggravating week with the USB port. Almost every time I started the car, it was unable to load the memory stick that holds my music. I'd unplug and replug it, then it would be found and after I hit the play button, it would pick up where it left off on the song that had been playing before. The key word here is "almost". Once or twice during the week, it would find the stick and start playing immediately, usually when the car had been shut off for only a few minutes or less. Saturday, it worked every time, with the exception that I still had to hit the play button for the music to start, although at least once the music started without me having to do that. This morning it worked when I left the house and again when I returned home. However, since I was going to mow the yard this afternoon, I didn't park in my usual spot. After I aborted the mowing (see the off topic forum), I move the car back to its spot, and once again I get the "loading media" message. Now I'm real curious to see how it behaves tomorrow. As annoying as this is, it's better than the lock up DebsXV and others experienced.

So far I have had zero issues with the head unit over the past 3 days. No freezing, no lag and I have been playing with it a lot. Before I turn the car off I just turn the volume down to zero.
I do have the Nav and will say she has a very nice voice.. My only wish was that the streets were better indicated as to where to make a turn. Hard to explain but, it was better in my previous car. I did run a few comparisons between Waze and the Navi.
Both always calculated the same route, so that was good. My last vehicles Nvai was completely :WTF so I never used it. What is cool is that lets say your using the Nvai and decide to change the screen to the radio, the nav directions get thrown up to the upper screen so you can use it there. No maps, just turn by turn but, it's nice to have that.

I have a small workaround for those people that mostly use Android Auto or Apple Car play and are annoyed at hearing the radio when they start the car or remove their phones.

The head unit defaults to the last "built in" Audio input when it starts up. Then it might connect to a phone and let that take over, etc. So if you set the built in input to something silent like "CD" with no disc on a Limited or "Aux" with nothing plugged in, you won't get any sound on vehicle start up or disconnection.

The last setting is remembered between restarts, so if you are using a phone for audio mainly, you can basically just set it once and have no more blasting radio while you wait for your phone to pair.

Its a bit more complicated if you use built it audio, but instead of having to turn down the volume each time if you don't want to hear music on startup you can just make a habit of switching to a "silent" input when you park.

On a separate note I have occasionally had issues with Android Auto not recognizing a plugged in phone. For me it seems to work best to plug in the phone before I start the car. I'd be curious about other people's experience though.

I do like the idea that the head unit doesn't turn off (never really understood why subaru did that, never had another car that turned off right away) but it appears that the power is cut (since the car has been turned off) so when the power is cut the phone or whatever you have connected is also disconnected. Hopefully this is something that they can update because I too find this a bit annoying (not the staying on, but the changing to another input) and it kinda defeats the purpose really.

Grrr .... after no initial issues I've now had the Sat Nav take 40 minutes to come online ( loading .... ) and then some days later, all the visited addresses disapear and it refuses to search for any new addresses ( I can put the address in but then it just sits there )
coming online issues, service suggested I pull the negative battery terminal off then on ( as per some previous posts ) .
With the failure to search, I was near the dealership so popped on to ask advice. Hmm, maybe it;s not up to the latest Rev. , 'I think it is',I said, they checked and yes, latest Rev. Next suggestion, ' you could disconnect he battery for a couple of minutes". Umm.. seeing as the car is 20 feet away, do you think you could do that for me ?, oh, Ok !.
Anyway, problem has gone away for the moment and all my previous addresses are still there... very frustrating though.

loving the car thought !, cheers , RayJay

I had an issue with my 2018 head unit where it only paired Bluetooth to my phone for media and not cell. But I believe it's more to do with my Axon 7 than anything else. Cause it works perfectly with my Samsung S7.

I was having all kinds of issues getting Andriod Auto to work correctly... It wouldn't connect properly and I would have to shut off the car, open the door, then close the door to turn back on the car and try again...a few times before AA would connect. And the GPS? It kept getting stuck searching for GPS signal" but never finding one...but, alas, I think it was all user error.

I always have my phone set to power saving, so although the initial connection between the phone and AA would seem successful, the moment the screen locked, I would have issues. It took me WAY too long to realize this (only caught on AFTER I'd changed every other setting on the phone and the Apps I could think of), so I wanted to share on the chance anyone else had this problem. Turn off the Power Saving feature on your phone prior to trying to connect to Andriod Auto. Once I did this, everything seemed to work MUCH better.

Of course, there is another option, you know, Jenfy. You could get rid of that way too complicated smart phone that you're lugging around and just go back to a flip phone. Problem solved! No more issues with Android Auto and all those other distracting buttons and screens on Skye Trek's dash. Just you, the car, and the open road.

P.S. Oops, I forgot that you live in Hampton Roads. There are no open roads. Just bridges, tunnels, and tolls. ... ...

This past weekend the head unit would not allow CarPlay to function. The Icon was there but, it was not as bright as the other icons, nor would it respond to pressing.

After futzing around with settings, repairing my iphone for 10 minutes I went into the head unit settings and did a hard reset. All good after that. I think there was a conflict because I had google maps, waze and apple maps all running on cellular. Who knows.

Last night the SatNav froze at startup, happily shows where I am on the road, just won't do anything, volume, on/mute, change to radio, change volume, steering wheel buttons, nothing. :-(
Stopped to get fuel. All ok on startup., excellent !. This morning, the same frozen unit just playing the radio and showing me where I am on the map.
Most frustrating.

Does anyoime know if I need to completely disonnect the power via the battery earth lead or is pulling one ( or two ) of the fuses inside the cabin enough to reboot it back into action ?

Twice now as the radio was playing, I'd hear a click and the radio would turn off, revert to its welcome screen then pick up where it left off. I've banged around on the dash to get it to replicate but no luck. I don't have the nav stuff.

I believe related to this is the fact that my lock/unlock chirps seem to disappear unexpectedly. (They can be turned back on by doing the procedure on the manual page 2-19.) For example, this afternoon as I was putting up my big cardboard SUBARU sun shield, I hit something on the dash (or maybe the overhead?) that caused my radio to click and recycle as described earlier. At the same event, I lost the chirps. So they are tied in some way. I turned the chirps back on per the manual and everything is again hunky dory. I think there's a tiny gremlin running around in my car.
