Double check the filesystem on the thumb drive and make sure it is NTFS, not FAT. I can step you through the process if you do not know what I am talking about.
Go to Subaru Map Update Delivery Portal
The program tells me that it "installs the software" on the thumb drive, not just downloading the files. So maybe the USB drive works more like a program.?.

So I double checked the drive and it is NTFS... I did also try reformatting the drive to FAT and also no dice. I am wondering if there is actually slightly different hardware for the 2018 models. The little release said 2019-2022.

Has anyone here performed this update on a 2018 Crosstrek?

I got the emails from SOA back in Decemberish, finally today set my sights to perform the update. Got my mechanical / tech-minded better half to help me, we got in my 2019 Crosstrek Premium with a printout of the email then couldnt get the "update available" tab to show up. I started searching on Google annd this forum, Reddit, etc. even downloaded files apparently somebody got from a dealer (havent used them or scanned them for viruses).

My sweet ride is a 2019 Crosstrek Premium, purchased 10/21 used / off-lease (per the old invoice the former lessee and / or the dealer left in the glove box) from Kolb Subaru in Rockland County NY. I believe it was a "select" used whatever that means / whatever that's worth... in any case the shifter lamp didnt work and they were happy to take care of it at no cost to me. But I digress...

Having seen SO many different scenarios involving different models / years / niche production runs / head unit versions (mine is the 6.5") / update methods in my research, I decided the safest thing to do would be to call Subaru Support. After being on hold a not too annoyingly long time, they said the Rel4.18.11.50 head unit version is the latest available for my vehicle.

Rel4.18.11.50 has generally worked ok, except a few weeks ago I thought the speakers had died because Pandora (via Android Auto) got really distorted and weird one day a few weeks ago (this motivated me to attempt the update today) altho the distortion went away after restarting the vehicle couple times. Maybe it was a bad Android Auto or Pandora or bluetooth update (I use Carsifi (wireless device / app) so I dont have to mess with usb cables - it has generally been pretty reliable).

Given the info I have presented, does anybody (a pro or somebody that really knows what they are doing and doesnt break stuff!) have any input on this matter? Thanks so much for any solid advice!

Interesting! If Sheldon is correct about the versioning, that would be an earlier version created in March 2018, although the 4 could mean it has more enhanced features. Anyone else with a '19 checked their firmware version?
FYI, I just got a 2019 Crosstrek Premium which has the new "6.5 in. Plus" HU (with CD player, SiriusXM and Starlink cloud apps).
It shows firmware version: Rel4.18.11.50.
So far, I have not had the problem with radio on startup. The radio starts in the same state it was in when car was turned off and key removed.
Also, Android Auto has connected (and stayed connected) reliably.
Rel4.18.11.50 is what I have in April 2024. See Reply #943. SOA says there is no update available to this. It generally works fine w Android Auto. AA phone / AA Maps / AA Pandora are mostly what I use day-to-day. Aha is a disaster and Starlink app doesnt work at all except maybe its lil piece of MySubaru on my phone.

Just wanted to let anyone who comes here to this thread with a 2018 base model crosstrek... this update does not work. I have tried 2 different drives one of which was brand new and the top model recommended in the Subaru bulletin in both NTFS as well as FAT32. The bulletin specifies that supported models are 2019 - 2022. I have my suspicions as to why 2018 is not supported but they are just suspicions at this point. I am taking my car into Subaru dealer in 2 days to have the update done by them. Good luck to everyone else.

I was told by Subaru/Starlink that Sirius XM radio is the contact for the STARLINK service on 2018 and older. I was having issues with the service and was transferred from Subaru to Sirius. The issue worked itself out which was great as I wasn’t getting anywhere with either. With the run around I received on this and the fact I still can’t manage my account I won’t be getting another Subaru.

I am curious what you mean when you say Sirius XM is the contact for the STARLINK service? You were transferred how... over the phone? Are you saying that if I go into the Subaru dealership they will not be able to perform the upgrade because only Sirius XM can perform the update? Dont mean to rapid fire so many questions but just little confused by your post. Hope all is well.

This is what happened.

I tried locking the doors via the app and the app showed I had not Starlink account which I do as it was paid in February 2024. I then went to the website and it stated the same. I haven't been able to manage my account for awhile now not sure this is the same issue or not. Called Starlink and they transferred my to Subaru who transferred me back, I was transferred about 4-5 times. Finally a rep from Subaru stated from 2018 and older are now being serviced by Sirius, didn't give an explanation as to why. I was finally able to get someone to help me after I told them I have been transferred several times bit as far as the account goes 'they" can't see into it because they no longer have access. Thankfully the service started working again. I was supposed to receive a call from a Subaru Tech or something to that affect but I never did.

I have not tried to go to Subaru since this happened. As far as I know I'm up to date.

Side not the Starlink/Sirius advisor stated I could not access my account due to not have the 4G upgrade completed, which I did in 2020, and told me to go to the dealer and tell them. I know for a fact the dealer cleared that in 2020.

Sad to say but this has made the decision for me not to buy another Subaru.

I hope this cleared it up at least a little bit.

One last update for this thread from me. I took my 2018 in to have the software updated by Subaru and they wanted to charge me $220 for this "service" which that said would take 3 -4 hours because the computers are slow these days... whatever that means I find it pretty pathetic to lock away software in that manner (full disclosure I am a software engineer). SO if anyone one this forum or thread has the heart to stumble across the files for a 2018 base trim crosstrek Harman Karden Head Unit I would be very grateful. All the best everyone.

Try at a different dealership.

yeah so it is actually some kind of standard as I was quoted $230 by 2 other dealers
My 2019 6MT Premium software update journey...

I called the local dealer's service department, and they said that the parts guy does that, so they transferred me to the parts department.
The parts folks were confused; they called the service boss guy and were told that the service does do the software upgrade.
I called service a week later, and they confirmed that they could do the update but needed to charge $163 because his guys would be working on it. He then suggested that I talk to their tech guy (the dude who teaches buyers how to use the HU, etc.).
I spoke to the tech guy. He was unsure but would look into it. The next day, he called me and said that he could do the update at no cost. Forty-five minutes later, my software was updated to Rel_UK.23.16.70.

where do you live?

I just bought a used Crosstrek/XV 2018 which got a HU with Navigation system. at first I connected my iPhone to try Car Play and it didn't work, after few troubleshooting steps, It worked for like couple of hours and never connected back again. I tried to update the software OTA but it stated that this is the latest version. I went to subaru.maps.com to get the latest firmware and downloaded to a USB, but my maps subscription has already expired and there is no way to purchase a license again as it doesn't show up as an option on the website.
Can someone who have access to subarunet.com share with me the firmware update only without maps.

Product Info: Subaru-Gen3-High-RW-MY2017-REVA
Current Firmware: Rel_A2.20.07.20
Required Firmware Upgrade: Rel.23.41.20

Or Maybe someone can help me get an activation code for the map? If thats a possible thing!
