The guy is right, without a good trail, you can't do much. There are some nicer trails around my place but some are very rutted out by bigger truck that you can't go fast. Most are also so narrow that you can get into a head on collision with those big truck if you are not careful. Good thing I got stock tires so I can't go fast anyway :tongue:

 

I've seen a lot of guys cutting off their front bumpers like that. It looks terrible. Some aftermarket shop needs to make a front bumper cover with a better approach angle that doesn't make the car look... incomplete.

 

It's already been done...in Australia. I forget the exact amount, but I recall it added about 5 degrees of approach angle while still covering all the lower front end stuff. I don't particularly like the bull bar but I'd go for just the color matched lower bumper plate.

 

A shorter bumper combined with relocated fogs, and a bottom steel guard/bash plate that increased the approach angle would be awesome! Maybe we can get a group together to design a set and have someone like SSD or Primitive make it.

Looks like a nice non-challenging trail drive. I suppose when he referred to the road as 'more intense', that was a relative term, but that Crosstrek looked good doing it. Now I want to go find a big mud puddle before the Subie meet in Balboa Park tonight....

 

I've ridden that road on my motorcycle! Me and the Georgia XV boys drove lots of roads like that just south of there. I miss the mountains! Sweet XV!

 

I think the video is a little annoying to be honest, the banter didn't do it for me and it's just a hardpacked road...nothing that a car couldn't handle.

 

It looks like a very nice trail to take a ride. Used to travel roads through fields due to my father's job that at times were much more challenging and more often than not we used to do it with 2WD cars and trucks. When the trail is "safe" the 2WD (RWD) cars/trucks are much more fun to drive in my opinion.

Not really impressed with the missing bumper look, a little over dramatic with the water splash and I am very skeptical about the thread title (not to annoy the people that like this look but the title is overstated).

P.S. I would love to see a picture of the engine compartment after they ran it through the water. I wonder if there is a splash guard under there at all.

That is exactly what a rally driver told me once. He said Subarus are boring to drive in rally races because they stick to the road too well. The real fun comes with RWD like Porche.

I am impressed by all the other crazy stuff he did to it. All the switches, light, and the suspension/tire setup. Cutting off the front bumper seems unnecessary unless he do real offroading. What the video showed was soft roading even my stock XV can do. Take it rock climbing then we will see why the cut off bumper is necessary.

There is another video with this car. Yes the splash guard is on there but it starts to come off and the disaster! I for one like the cut bumper look but dont like the loss of fog lights. maybe a nice baja style bull bar connected to a skid plate would be a little more complete looking. a replacement bumper cover it $150-$170 on eBay. might be worth chopping one up and playing with some aluminum. hmmmm

To be honest, you seem to have the same basic off-roading mods as the featured Crosstrek, tires, wheels and light bar. So what's so underwhelming about it?

 

That the claim is the "Most Badass" I don't consider mine to be badass, all the mods (as others have stated) make it look more aggressive, sure, but unless you actually do something with it, it's like "meh, what else is new?"

Plus without engine mods, the 148 crank HP is completely useless for rock crawling or deep mud trails.

Just feel like more should be done before proclaiming yourself to be king of the world.

 

I always hate seeing vehicles being referred to as "the most badass" and other absolutes. I know it's being a little petty, but vehicle modifications are subjective. What some find badass, others hate. Such as the front bumper. Also, the threshold is constantly moving. What if ADF releases that 4" lift? Would their test vehicle then be the most badass?

Lastly, and I don't mean this demeaningly as I love the mods he's done, but from the looks of it, I've done more/harder things off road.

Collins who wrote the Jalopnik article.

Ha, I just watched the second video where the idiot destroys his radiator on a rock, has to have like nine guys help lift it off, then rolls it to a gas station to get towed.

Perhaps the "most badass crosstrek" should have invested in some skid plates...
