I just get into it, put my seatbelt on, turn the key, put it in gear and drive it. It's a car, but a cute one. Labels are just marketing gimmicks. I do everything the same that I did with my Aveo except release the clutch in order to change gears and curse the car's unreliability.

Let see, official paperwork called hatch back Impreza a 5 door sedan. They called my XV a 4 door wagon, SUV, or hatchback. Rarely seen CUV used in official documents.

I think the Japanese define any car with certain amount of ground clearance as a SUV regardless of size. Because XV's ground clearance beat out a lot of SUV, it's SUV by that definition.

If you look at American standard of SUV, XV has less room than an Impreza (a sedan) and therefore not big enough as a SUV. They call the in between car a CUV.

Definitely a car, might be a wagon, definite a hatchback. I call it a jacked up 5 doors sedan just to mess with people:D

This all depends on the definition. I always go with CUV (crossover utility vehicle) as they are built on car platforms. SUVs traditionally have been built on truck frames.
I agree with scubasteve... although realistically, I'd agree just as much that it's just a "marketing" term. I remember when CUVs were "new" and still many people don't really know what a CUV is. Still to this day I'd tell people that "it's a CUV" and get confused looks - okay, "small SUV" and all of a sudden you see the lightbulb turn on in their heads! Most don't even hear "Crosstrek" - somebody thought I said crosscheck. I suppose at the end of the day, it's answered by how you drive it! Cargo? City driving? Rocks and trails? ...there's your answer! :D

Why don't we ask what the Crosstrek identifies as?
Unfortunately, that's a loaded question. Many Crosstreks may be confused by other models and expectations put on by their owners on how they should accessorize and sound with many owners imposing their will by bolting on accessories without asking. :storm:

Thanks for all the answers, even if we went a bit afield with the woodgrain Dinoc treatment. This is really interesting to me, as from NHTSA's point of view, there is nothing different in the Crosstrek which would change it's status from "automobile" to "truck", which is usually where Utility Vehicles are found. There is also no meaningful difference any longer between an SUV and CUV, the latter an invention of the industry as unitized construction displaced body-on-frame. However, at this time in the industry, one cannot apply differences of 1) ground clearance, 2) body-on-frame vs. unitized, 3) lockable diffs, 4) selectable transfer case, or any other measure and find it consistently applied. Many organizations/publications come up with their own schemes, with one which binned a Grand Cherokee to CUV, but Dodge Durango to SUV, although they are the same vehicle, just 2 vs. 3 rows! Given the shenanigans and camouflage of actual products and nomenclature, it's interesting to read how each of us interprets this for ourselves. There is clearly a desire for Crosstrek to be seen differently than an Impreza among most of us owners, so we do seem to imbue it with "specialness". This is really just brilliant product planning and great marketing at Subaru! So, call it what you wish, as there doesn't seem to be a correct/incorrect answer. Some folks in research have simply pointed to the profile of a vehicle at this taller ride height and said they're just all SUVs. In our company, we dropped the "S" and "C" and just call them UVs, if we can reasonably separate them from cars. Take a look at the new Chevy Cruze hatchback and imagine it raised up a bit and maybe a touch of different trim...what would that be similar to? Love this industry!

It's an SAV (Swiss Army Vehicle), the go almost anywhere, do almost anything vehicle that is safe, reliable, fuel efficient, aesthetically pleasing to the eye, and quite nimble on its feet vehicle. The Crosstrek does it all!

State Farm tells me its a "sports wagon", I usually just call it a small SUV. Truck never comes to thought, especially since I just came from an F150, ha.
Just to play with them, ask what an Impreza is (check for a rate difference while you're at it!) and challenge them to explain the difference!

Don't laugh, according to the DMV Registration card in D.C. which lists my '15 Limited as "T4W" (translation: Truck 4-wheel drive)!!
So what you are saying is that yulcit1's gf runs the DMV in DC? :)

Interesting thread in that, at least in Virginia, it plays a part in window tinting. I got 50% ceramic tint on the front side windows but kept the rear sides/rear the stock tint. In VA cars can only have 35% tint, while SUVs can have any darkness. Now to see what Virginia categorizes the Crosstrek as, plain jane wagon or SUV? if the latter, then I think I'll go ahead and get the rears done black as night.
