High beams on 2025 Limited: I'm befuddled

If anyone can help... I don't fully understand how to operate the high beams in my new 2025 Limited.

In our 2024 Outback Touring, with the switch set to AUTO, when I push the light stalk forward, the stalk stays in the forward position, and the high beams are engaged with High Beam Assist. To turn the high beams off, I pull the stalk back to the center position.

But in my 2025 Crosstrek Limited, it doesn't work that way. I always have the switch set to AUTO. When I push the stalk forward to turn on the high beams, the stalk always returns to the center position. Yes, the high beams do go on, and I see the green HBA indicator on the dashboard. And when I pull the stalk toward me, the high beams do go off... but the HBA indicator stays on. That's what I don't understand... doesn't that mean that the high beams will go back on again at some point? How do I turn the high beams off if I don't want them to go back on at all?

The other thing that confuses me is that if I push the stalk forward again, the high beams go on, and the green HBA indicator goes off.

I have tried to decipher the owner's manual, and I'm just not having much luck. Can anyone help me to understand how to control the high beam behavior? Thank you so much!

My 2024 Limited does the same. I think that if you have your lights set on auto and you turn high beams on, it will default to auto high beams. Which means when the eyesight detects a car coming towards you , it will automatically lower and then go back to high when the car is past. If you press the lever forward again, it should turn autohighbeam off.

Mine won’t turn off in HBA mode unless I wait until there’s no oncoming traffic. Once the headlights go on, I can switch it off. Anyway, I really like the feature—it works great. I can now use the high beams on roads where it would have been too annoying before.

There is probably a YouTube video that explains how they work if you can find it.
When I get desparate I ask somebody at my Subaru dealership. I practically lived there for the first couple weeks I owned my Wilderness.
Try turnining High Beam Assist OFF (HBA)??? I assume you are using your headligts when it is actually dark outside? HBA only works at night.
I don't drive when it is dark very often, so when I do I have to learn all over again.

Thank you, everyone, for these helpful replies! I'll try out these suggestions. I think part of my confusion was in thinking that pulling the stalk toward me should just turn the high beams and the HBA off... but obviously it's more complicated than that. Using the info everyone has provided, I'll figure it out!
