depend on how fast you accumulate mileage, for me i passed my 36000 miles without the need to change any of those items 🤣🤣🤣. at the end i change myself is just because of performance upgrade features compared than stock 👍
 
We purchased a 2024 CrossTrek in 01/2024, currently with 4,500 miles. It was taken in for our first mainstence inspection today, 06/17/2024, and while waiting in the serice area, we received an email that service was needed on the vehilce, which included a new cabin air filter. They had a video of the filter showing it had caught considerable dirt particles and a small leaf.

This is our first Subaru, having owned Toyotas only for over 40 years. In all of the years owning a Toyota I never have had a cabin air filter become dirty so quickly. Which makes me wonder what the differnce would be between how Toyota and Subaru process their cabin air through the filter.

I know this might seem trivial to some, but I just paid $30,000 for a CrossTrek, and then to have the dealer say I needed to pay $54, at 4,500 miles, seems like a joke. I live in the same area of where I owned Toyotas and never have I had to replace a filter that often, which I inspected and replaced on my own.

Is there a difference between how Toyota and Subara process cabin air?
Don't be fooled by dealer BS. I own a 2023 Crosstrek & was never told that I needed to change the Cabin Filter by my dealer. I once brought my wife's Acura for an oil change by Jiffy Lube and had a $$ off coupon & they said she needed a cabin filter on her car which had 50,000+ miles. They went on to show me a disgustingly dirty filter which would cost me about $75. (Of course, I couldn't go into their shop to watch them...insurance policy. I declined for them to change it because I knew I could get one for cheaper and do it myself. After I bought one at Autozone for about $30, I went to change it and It "definitely" wasn't the same disgustingly dirty filter that they showed me!!! I could have just blown it out and it would have lasted another 50K, but since I bought one, I changed it. Don't be fooled by dealer's or other shop's hijinx to get you to pay for things you don't need. Buyer Beware!!
 
the owner's manual does not tell you that the glovebox is to be cleaned out during the filter change.
You will learn this the first time you change the filter.
 
I can see the engine air filter very easily, 2 clips, and take a look. If it is dirty then probably the cabin air filter is also. If the engine air filter is not dirty I am not going to let the Service Department charge me big bucks for something that doesn't need to be done.

you are getting ripped off, who knows where they got that cabin air filter from that they took a picture of, probably belonged to another customer

It only takes 5 minutes or less for me to check my own and anytime I'm taking my car to the dealership I'm sorry I meant steelership I always take a picture so if they bring out some dirty nasty cabin air filter and tell me I need a new one I can threaten them with a lawsuit and tell them here's the picture of mine that I just took before I came to your business. And I've actually had to use that line twice in the last 5 years.

do you live in a desert area and suffer a lot of dust storms because where I live my cabin filter doesn't need replacing till around 40,000 miles or more
 
Try a K&N cabin air filter. Costs more initially but lasts forever with your periodic cleaning.
Same applies to the engine air filter. This from a forty year happy K&N customer.

Nope I live in central florida, when I was driving freeways a lot of the time the cabin filter stayed pristine and clean for a very long time. But when I drive in very rural areas with lots of dust leaves and other detitus blowing around that's when it gets dirty faster.
 
I too have been a fan of K&N air filters, however, the oil used on these air filters can have an adverse affect on the MAF , mass air flow sensor of the car causing all sorts of problems Stick with OEM air filters especially while under warranty
No MAF on the cabin air filter.

Oil is only needed on K&N oil air filters for the engine, their cabin filters which is what this thread is about do not require any oil.

As for Engine air filters, for exactly the reason you stated, though I have enjoyed using K&N oiled filters in my past, I went with an AEM dry filter - lifetime reusable washable. It has been fantastic. Four and a half years and still in New condition.
