Cheap Foam fix for Wireless Charger

After 4 trips from NJ to Indiana, for the MOST part, my phone stayed within wireless charger range. But when I was at Michaels ( craft store ) with my wife, I saw a piece of 1/4" dark gray foam that caught my eye. So for $.79 I bought it.

Then when home I made a paper stencil of the wireless charger and made a cutout in some thin packing foam I had as a trial piece. Finally cutting my EXPENSIVE (LOL) foam and making the phone cutout join to the switch/led to make it easier to remove the phone.

In the picture, it looks lighter in color than it is. If I see true BLACK foam sometime in the future, I may SPLURGE for the less than a dollar to get a darker piece.

Just a thought I wanted to share ......

My 1st template was White Foam painted black. Didn't like the look or feel. As I said it's much darker almost matching the gray trim when not using a light to take the picture. And It will work, color doesn't look as drastic as the picture shows. Followup trips to any craft store may result in me finding a black or darker piece.

64G MP3 music. About 3000 songs. On a long trip I put it into alphabetical order. Other times I pick Folders. Have yet to listen to it all. Much of my music from Vinyl, cassette and cd I have saved to many a PC or storage device over the years. Anything from Motown thru current heavy metal. ..... Smokey Robinson thru Ghost

Interesting note:

My wireless charger is hit or miss. My (iPhone 13 mini) has a pretty thick case, so wireless charging is always hit or miss.

I was considering a mod like yours but was experimenting, trying to find the optimal position.
To my amazement, if your phone is on the charger, when you turn the key to accessory (or maybe on, without holding the brake, so it doesn’t start), you can hear a distinct “ert- ert - ert, ert - ert - ert“ sound From the charger bed.

I think that some (probably way overly complex mechanism) is searching for your phone’s charger spot.
I‘m pretty sure it only searches once, each time you power the car on.
If the phone is off to the side, during the search, the optimal position ends up on the side, and if you then center the phone - it doesn’t work! This caused me no end of confusion trying to find the sweet spot.

With you $0.79 mod, this won’t be an issue, but it could explain some of the pain.

You might look at this thread and put the charger in 'Quick Charge' mode. Seems to work on my wifes SE2020, but quick charge does nothing for my S21 5G.

Having a few concerns when I got mine, the Manual still has a lot of good info I go back to. I went from a thicker case to a slim case. Now always charges. Subaru will say No Case as per note on pg 294. Also my Samsung doesn't slide around much as surface feels sticky on my charger. When it does move it says the charger coils below move to continue charging. I have seen that as phone slides, led turns green for a second or two then back to yellow to charge.

Also there is a QUICK CHARGE mode. Pg 292 refers to it. press power switch 3 times and led changes green/orange. Now it's in Quick Charge mode.

My experiences and $.02 ...... any more information anyone has is also welcome.

My Samsung Flip Phone has a metal type hard case, I drop them in my job, held on with double sided tape. My 2024 Wilderness sometimes will charge sometime not??? The car recognizes the phone when I start up, but I put it on the charge pad and nothing, yes I turn it on, green light in car comes on, still I don't think it is working?????
Disappointed that there is 1) No cigarette lighter plug in glove box (manual says theres one) and 2) No USB port right at the dash.
I need to plug in my Escort 8500 detector without running the cord all the way back to the arm rest. BLENDMOUNT makes a plug in for my VETTE that hooks up to the power in the rearview mirror connection for power ( a pain in the *** to take apart the windshield mounted cameras and crap.

So is this made to prevent the phone from sliding around? or to help charge the phone easier? I am late to the party here...sorry

Stop it from sliding around and out of range for the charger coil to follow. I drop the phone in and it doesn't move, stays charging. Both my Samsung S21 and my wife's Iphone SE2020. But only hers supports 'fast charging'.

As noted elsewhere, I ordered the blank plate that goes in that spot, it's supposed to be here tomorrow. Just going to get rid of the charger and have that be a safe spot to store stuff.

Probably going to put a yellow lens film over the LED light in that cubby, too... can't have the phone face-up in that spot without the light reflecting into the corner of my eye.

I Personally don't use the wireless charger, as it is inconsistent with its charging rate. So we use the the old way of plugging in. No issues that way. We just have the wireless charger off, and have a small rubber pad in that area to prevent or stuff from sliding or scratching the plastic. Haven't had any issues since.

In our other vehicle, I have the wireless charger unplugged (disconnected) as well. These wireless chargers are touchy IMO and seem to heat up our phones more than doing good. So we go old school. One less thing to worry about ;)
