Why does my car beep after I turn the engine off and open the door? FIXED!

This is a minor annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.
After I park, turn off the engine, and then open the door, the car starts beeping. Why?

On older cars, this used to happen when the key was left in the ignition, but with a keyless start, that's obviously not the issue.
There's a little warning "i" on the screen, but that doesn't exactly help.

EDIT: (4 years later)
I figured it out and I wanted to edit this post because this thread come on up google.
I believe this happens when you open the door BEFORE shutting off the engine.
I was able to reliably replicate this consistently.

I park, unbuckle and then open the door with one hand while pressing the engine stop button with another.
This means sometimes the door opens a split second before the engine is off, sometimes a split second after.

Thank you for posting this. Mine does the same. It drives me crazy and I can't figure out why it does. My only guess is there is a minute or two before the electrical shuts down and it is the seatbelt warning.

Me three...

It bothers me that maybe it's not properly closed and locked. When I get to the garage door (about 30ft away and out of range of the keyless fob) I often click the lock button.

This undermines the usefulness of the keyless entry, push to start functions.

So much tech these days that doesn't work... :icon_rolleyes:

Also bothered. I've been trying to run down when it happens and haven't found any common denominator. Sometimes it chimes and sometimes it doesn't. Not sure what is triggering it. Sometimes it keeps on chiming as I leave the car and doesn't stop until I shut the door (with me outside).

Mine beeps too, but only when I'm singing along with the Beatles:

Baby you can drive my car
Yes I'm gonna be a star
Baby you can drive my car
And maybe I'll love you

Beep beep'm beep beep yeah

I have no idea what beeps you guys are talking about. The only beeps I get is when I do something wrong, like trying to shut off the car, before I put it in park, or not put on my seat belts, or...., but none that I can think of that happens for no reason.

I echo sentiments with RP, I do not experience this 'beeping' that you guys are referring to. The only actual beeping I hear is when I leave the car but forgot to turn off the engine, (which I've done by accident a few times, mainly because my 'trip end' procedure gets interrupted somehow)

There must be a certain sequence of events that causes it. I haven't paid attention and doesn't happen all the time, or often enough for me to try to determine what the problem is.

One thing I noticed while working on the dash cam install is that you can't get it to shut up if you turn it on while the door is open... :icon_rolleyes:

I have an 18' Limited and experience this as well. My wife has an 18' Outback Limited and it happens with her too I will start paying attention to shutting off the engine before opening the door to see if that is what it is....but I typically always do that but only have the "chime" noise some of the times when exiting the car.

...didn’t you notice...it beeps and says goodbye...it’s just communicating with you...lol

To me the chiming happens if the seatbelt is unbuckled before the car is off and stays chiming after the car is off and the door is opened. I've also had the "key not present" message after which the alarm went off when the unlocked door was opened. I had to let the alarm cycle off as the fob had no effect.

Mine does it if it is still on and I press the button to turn it off.
It doesn't do it very often.
I wonder if it's key debounce and I press too lightly to turn it off but it's still in acc position, because the dashboard doesn't light up like the "on" position..

To replicate it, press button from off to acc. (one press)

If you leave the car it will beep once.

We have a 2016 Legacy Limited and 2017 Outback Limited. We have the chime occasionally with the Legacy but never with the outback when you open the door with the car off. It is clearly a defect but 2 dealers have not been able to figure it out. I even made a video of the defect to show the dealer. It only happens if the temperature is above 70 degrees (i.e. never during the winter) and it is intermittent. So it is either a bad mechanical or electrical connection somewhere.

I never had the beeping sound before until recently. I couldn't figure out what it was at first, and it beeped constantly when I turned off the car. Turns out, my husband left his set of keys in the passenger side door and forgot them there, so the car was beeping to let me know keys were left in the car. I wouldn't have figured that out as I had my own keys in my hand and had no idea his were tucked in on the side door. Anyway it stopped beeping and haven't heard it since.

This exact thing happens to me with my 2020 Forester. It is intermittent. Sometimes I get the warning light and two beeps for open door when leaving car (with engine OFF) and sometimes not. Although with my car the warning light is more than an "i" on the screen. Along with the two beeps the warning signal is a red diagram of door open.
