I grew up in Iowa and we had ethanol in our gas as far back as I can remember. Once leaded gas was phased out we had 87, 89, and 91 (93?) octane at most pumps.
87 and 91 were 10% ethanol blends. 89 was pure gas. And still is if I remember right.
I did figure out I got better mileage with the pure gas. But when prices were under $1.00/gallon, the extra $0.10/gallon for ethanol meant you were still spending more money. I don't know if the up charge is higher now but if it's still only $0.10/gallon with prices where they are now, you would be a fool to buy 87.
But I doubt the difference is that small any more. I'll look when I'm out there later next month.
