I've always wondered about this for the skid plates since they all leave the sides exposed, good to know its possible to leave it on. Have you noticed any detrimental effects leaving the plastic shield on like melting/burning the plastic? Also, did you get the oil access hole option and if so, does it leave sufficient space to access the oil plug if the plastic shield is still there?
No issues so far. It's been around a year and a half.
Yes I have the oil access hole and there's enough room. I also have the fumoto valve, so oil changes are very easy.

I did the 30k mile oil change today. I noticed that the old oil from the old filter didn't seem to drain back into the block. Picture below. Does that seem normal? I think I remember it draining back before.

I just mopped it up with paper towels and installed the new filter.
