running the gas tank to empty

This past weekend I made a trip to an event south of Dallas (approx 300 miles). I filled up with ethanol-free gas here at home before I left with the hope of getting to an ethanol-free station here on OK to fill up on the way back. I didn't make it. After almost 500 total trip miles and running the car for maybe 30 minutes with the low fuel light on, I had to put gas in it at the first opportunity. So I got 4 gallons of ethanol-laced gas in Kiowa, OK to get me home and to a real gas station. BTW the calculated mileage for the trip was 35 mpg and utilizing the AC about 3/4 of the time.

Now you have the history. The car has not been its smooth self since yesterday's "emergency" fillup mostly in the form of some minor surging and uneven acceleration. Could I have sucked some junk from the bottom of the gas tank into the fuel filter? Also, it's the gas that keeps the fuel pump cool. Perhaps I over-heated the pump? Bottom line: I'll NEVER run the tank down again! The MY18 car has almost 11K miles now.

Is it still doing this with ethanol-free gas? it's possible that the ECU is just confused by the ethanol gas and not sure what to do at times. If the pump is the problem, you are more likely to see stalling than surging. Gunk in the tank is also possible but seems odd with just 11K miles so far. That shouldn't give the car enough time to accumulate enough junk. The other possibility is sticky throttle body that is just happen to coincide with the gas. I would run through the remaining ethanol gas and let it run through at least half of your normal gas so ECU has time to catch up.

It certainly is possible that you sucked up some junk. I would get some gas in it, take it out on a freeway and open it up to see if it blows the crud out. I doubt you have any, given your low mileage to date.
