The Gold plan DOES NOT cover the wear items such as brake pad/shoe linings, rotors, clutch linings, and wiper blades. Only the 3/36 will. Per my service dept. Almost everything else is covered by the gold plan though.

If the pads are below X/32nds(can't remember the exact number) they will replace them. I have an oil change at 35k comming in about 3k so maybe I'll be below by then but i doubt it.

Read it or wait for somebody who has read it to answer. I made an assumption on the original warranty and gave mistaken information. Wear items for 6 years can have an entirely different wording than wear items for 3 years.

Yes, they were covered under warranty. The problem is that if they keep wearing out at the present rate I'll be spending around $500 every 18K miles. I'm somewhat of a shade tree mechanic and I'm going to try cleaning and greasing the moving parts every Spring.

Why is it $500? Should be like $300 tops for all 4 wheels with pads and rotors. For the parts.

You must have an underlying issue or just a bad set of pads. For the pads to wear so fast and if its not the way you drive, then the caliper must be hanging up and not realising. You can easily test this by stopping on an incline in N see if she rolls without any brake input. If she doesn't roll or not smooth you will know.

A few times last winter after going thru a touch less car wash my fronts would hang up at a stop until they dried out. I thought it was odd because it never happened on any other car.

I would talk to your service advisor and have them go over the system to find the problem before your warranty runs out.

Why should a mechanic fix it, when he can see you every 18 months and collect $500. It's called job security! :) Watch video in display #10

The video is a good tool I have seen you post it before. I preform preventive maintenance on all my and my parents brakes. Not only for safety sake but it also makes the brake job go much easier, because I'm the one doing the job.

my brakes have felt a bit abrasive lately and I get a little feedback through the pedal that is less than silky smooth indicating maybe I'm into the wear indicators. I pulled a front wheel a couple of weeks ago and there was plenty of pad left. I pulled a rear just now and have about a quarter inch of pad material left, plenty. Must be no issue, also I did notice when descending from 9500' to less than 5K' a couple of days ago and had to use the brakes a bunch, I can no longer pick up on the rough pedal feedback. I'm at 26K miles and all is well.

bignick if your having a pulse of your brakes that could be an indication of a warp rotor. In addition their's an upgrade of suspension bolts, due to an odd pedal feel. They redesign the front mounting bolts for securing the front cross member. To eliminate vibration. STRUCTURE:BODY

I completely agree with HadaBaja. I don’t know why the dealer telling like this. There is no way to fail the rear brakes before the front. If you can spend some dollars, then you could inspect it by any auto mechanic or car care service center. The better is to consult with the Subaru vehicle specialists like http://apexspecialized.ca in Edmonton.

I recently had to have the rear pads on my XV replaced after only 18K miles. The dealer said that, although 18K was unusually early for pad failure, rear breaks tend to fail before front. Has anyone else had this problem and if so how can I prevent it from happening?
My Impreza didn't last 18K, I have always gotten over 60K miles on all my previous cars. this was disappointing. And as a salesman on the road I seldom had pad replacement while mostly highway driving.

wow you ressurected a zombie thread. seems they didn't know back then that the rear brakes do in fact wear out first. I drive my crosstrek hard and I got 50k miles off the rear brakes and 60k off the front brakes.

really hard to say why you only got 18k because I don't know your driving habits but if you ride the brakes that would do it

Apparently you apply light pressure to slow down which applies the rear brake first rather than keeping pressure on the brakes while stopping which will engage the front brakes. I do the same thing and $500 later I had an engineer explain what I was doing wrong! Thought I was smart not applying lots of pressure to the brakes! ???? Now I'm really confused.

Interesting, I had never thought of that as a 'bad' thing. I am aware of the EBD wearing the rears more on modern cars but not the light braking too.
Another 'brake' issue that I have noticed is that while using Cruise Control, our cars aggressively brake to keep from gaining speed on downhills- that will certainly affect the pad life. I have begun turning off the CC while going downhill and 'resume' it back on at the bottom.

I don't do any of that I just hit the brakes like I have for the past 50 years!

If it hasn't been mentioned already, brakes and clutches are covered under the 30K warranty...

My crosstrek havent change any pad after 70k kms, even though due to vehicle stability control, it may wear your rear pad first if your driving pattern aggressive enough to keep triggering the vsc

EBD, applies the inside rear brake in turns to educe understeer.
