Paired Phone Connection Issues on 2024

Hi all -

Just thought I'd document this issue here, in case anyone else runs into it. My wife noticed today that her iPhone didn't automatically connect to her Crosstrek (2024 Premium) when she was on her way home. Tried to get it to connect but it wouldn't budge, so I had her leave the car on when she got home.

I couldn't get it to connect, either. Tried disabling/re-enabling Bluetooth, turning off/on the phone in question, turning off/on the car, even completely deleting (forgetting) and repairing the phone. Nothing. Wouldn't even connect to my iPhone, which had also been paired previously and connected seamlessly. Just kept getting a message that it couldn't connect, timed out, etc. Wouldn't work with Bluetooth OR CarPlay....

Only thing that got it to work was resetting Factory Defaults for the head unit, basically a full software reset for a car that we've only had for two weeks. Really, really annoying that we had to do that. Lost the paired phones, radio station presets, loaded in birthdays, etc. Also noticed that I'm not going to be able to do wireless software updates since I'm in Massachusetts and ineligible for Starlink. I'll have to figure out how to do the manual USB install, since I really don't want to pay a dealer for such a trivial task.

TL;DR Crosstrek would not connect to either paired phone via Bluetooth or CarPlay until its factory settings were restored. I am mildly annoyed and had thought all the complaints about this head unit were over-dramatized.

Best,
TGL

What model iPhones are you and your wife using?
Software updates should be covered under the factory warranty and be free of charge at least thats how it’s covered by subaru of Canada
one question where does your wife out the phone when she gets in the car as I find mine does not connect to my Cplay2air on our 2022 Limited if I leave the phone on the passengers seat as the electronics in the heated seat cause interference

She has an iPhone 13 mini and I have an iPhone 14 Pro Max. Both running iOS 16.4.1, I believe. It occurring on both the phones leads me to believe it was the car’s unwillingness to connect that was the problem.

Oh, that’s nice. I thought I would’ve had to pay for the dealer’s time to install updates. Do you know if there’s a place online where I can check for software update releases?

Interesting point about the seat electronics - I think hers was in the cubby spot under the screen.
I have a 2023 Limited and just recently got my car back from the dealer with infotainment bluetooth connectivity issues. Prior to going to the dealership, i connected my car to wifi and updated the software myself but the problem persisted. They did a software update for me that they had a TSB for (from what i was told). So far, i haven't had any issues and i've had it back for a solid week. My issues prior to going to the dealer: my phone will automatically connect but it would disconnect during a call with the call still being on then it will connect again randomly. My phone is usually located in the cup holder so it's never far away from the system. It would also disconnect when I go under an underpass, which is odd since the phone is in the car. The service advisor told me that they have been having issues with the new BRZ's infotainment system and basically Subaru has a crap technology. He also said that the fix is not guaranteed but hopefully better than what i've been experiencing and that if the problem keeps happening, we will look into replacing the whole infotainment system which is what they are doing with a lot of the BRZ's that they have been getting. Since my car is only 5 mos old, i did not pay anything to get this update.
