Hi, my wife and I just purchased our first Subaru, and WOW we love it!
We found a used 2018 Crosstrek 50th Anniversary Edition at a car sales in Easton, PA.
It does have brutal mileage of 160k but the car is crazy clean and tidy, flew through an inspection and so far, we've put
around 3k on it with no issues at all and now just about to do an oil change.
The eyesight is amazing (scary at times as it feels really weird letting the car take control) but super great feature on long road trips.
Absolutely comfortable and smooth just like my '89 Caddy (and I love her).

The only thing I am wondering and it maybe the mileage factor but we've only been getting around 310-340 on a full tank with a mix of 30 city and 70 highway driving.
Is this average? or should we been getting better?
It is in no way a nudge down against the car but thought we'd be getting around 420-450 on a tank from the research I was doing before we purchased it.
Thanks for reading ✅🚙😁

We have almost the same car and would be thrilled to get 30 MPG in city driving. I don't pay attention any more but when I was tracking it by gallons pumped and miles driven it was about 17 MPG in L.A. traffic.

-Run a can of Chevron “Techron” through it. Follow the instructions…put it in a full tank and run it as far down as you’re comfortable before filling up (diluting).
-are all fluids up to date? (Engine oil, transmission etc)?
-Tires up to pressure? (34 or so cold). Are the tires bigger than stock size, or more aggressive/heavier?
-any aero drag? Rooftop cargo box?
-any big hills (like mountain ranges) on your route?
-Easy driving should net you between 400 and 500 miles per tank, if your model year’s tank capacity is same as current year’s.

I‘m getting (calculated) 30 when I’m at 90/10 freeway/city on my 2023 Limited (2.5 engine). Shows more like 31-32 on the display. I drive like an old man though…easy starts, no jackrabbiting, and rarely over 72-75 mph.

Good luck, and report back

so I haven’t been tracking for very long, but this is what I am averaging. I drive mostly highway and since I started tracking my commute changed from 6 miles per day to 70, so my average is gonna end up around the larger figure. Keep in mind my car has a manual trans so those get worse mileage than the CVT cars, and I also have my HVAC system on Auto, so the A/C is probably on most of the time. YMMV, literally.

Gonna try it. I do live in the Catskills. Normal speed average is around 70. Only a 10 minute jaunt to work though.
I bet that short commute contributes mightily to your poor (ish) fuel economy.
Engine is barely up to efficient operating temp that quickly, and the benefits of freeway economy really aren’t seen, even though you’re on a freeway.

Have you done a longer road trip yet? My guess is you’ll see much better numbers, specially if you do the other items listed above.

New owners of a 2023 Subaru Crosstrek Premium in Cool-Grey Khaki with CVT. we had only driven manual transmission cars, and we agreed that we need an "automatic" in the event of foot, leg, knee trouble in our advanced years. We absolutely love it! Totally fun car to drive even without shifting! so glad we did the analysis and came up with the Crosstrek as our choice.

Cold same zone we run 40 psi

Under summer fuel and non-winter conditions. In your points of the eastern US, no warm-ups with idle, slowly roll from address and be easy on the go-pedal. Layoff accessories [heated seats, defrost mode. Drive cold, slow and raw and mange the tyre pressure. Easy at the pedal. Never over 50mph till warm-ups.

Start off slower and watch the heater accessories and tyre pressure and the ethanol reduced volatile proponents.

Good luck, and report back

As soon as I read this I thought of the 1988 comedy License to Drive

Welcome! I've got a 2019 Limited. Been tracking mileage since I got it with 90% city/10% highway most of the time and ~1000 mile round trip highway 2 to 3 times a year.

Overall mileage is 24.8. Looks like I get 22-23 mpg/fill up normally, and up to 34 mpg/fill up on a road trip.

Looks like normally about 330 miles/fill up when I'm not on a road trip.

Been tracking using fuelly. I keep the computer display in the car set on a screen that shows gas mileage just to impress passengers. It would have me believe I'm getting about 28 mpg all the time.

Was it the line, "Drive as if a cup of brim water is balancing on your dash board?" :)
Not from the movie but there one I like: drive as if you're taking your grandma to a pot luck and there's a big bowl of her famous chili on the back seat.

I dug out the spreadsheet from when I was tracking it when we first got the car. The best city was 21.9 and the worst was 16.9. The Exaggerometer was 9% and 11% optimistic, respectively. For highway, the best was 27.7 and the worst was 27.0, 6% and 10% optimistic. I tracked it for a year and the averages were 23.4 and 12%. It never underreported the fuel efficiency.

I've been tracking my milage, manual calculation, since I bought the car new in November of 2020. 2021 Ltd 2.5 Cvt. 95% of my driving is on rural county roads [25 to 45mph and a daily 20 mile round trip + some incidentals] No freeways on my rural PNW island. Just clocked a total of 15k miles.
Yearly average is just under 28mpg.

That's great that the bigger engine had better fuel economy. How does it compare to the car's display?

2021 Limited same specs as MichaelCJ . Bought new late January '22 now has 14,000 miles .

Display reads +1.5 - +1.7 mpg pencil to paper. Summer fuel, easily get 34.5 - 37 mpg [6.0 - 6.5L/100 km] avg 20% city/ 80% hwy.

Winter? Somehow a full +2 mpg generous on display vs pencil to paper. Ethanol here in Upstate, NY 10-15% under guidelines to extend percentages at pumps, 28 - 30 mpg [8.5L/100km 7.8L/100km]. Extreme cold 10°F - 0°F as day high, low 20 mpg

Never use the A/C in summer as we apply silver make-up on our vampire faces these parts, and a good cloudy overcast day resembles the true norm. Winter you're just driving in the darkness, with freezing cold winds, or snows, with some sleet and we add ice on the rocks -

we could all work for the post office with that training.

The speed limit here is 65 mph, we keep it mornings around 50 - 55mpg cuz ....

Our Upstate NY beasts actually have their own mail box addy and are seen reading Deer Abby on your lawn furniture mornings. They drink Earl Gray two clumps, settled, not stirred.
