I just received an email from Subaru of America requesting me to apply the July update Rel_UK.25.04.70 but when I started the update procedure it said my device software was already up to date despite it showing a different update number than specified in the update documentation. Mine showed Rel_UL.23.13.70 before and after the attempted update. The vehicle is a 2021 Crosstrek Limited and I don't have a Starlink subscription or whatever they are now calling it.

I did not attempt to apply the updates that I was notified about in 2024 because we were in between houses living in a short-term apartment and did not have ready access to wifi in the parking lot.

Has anyone else tried to apply this update and had a similar issue?

Thanks in advance.

Thanks. So it sounds like my current release is a global release and the letter is referencing a North American version. I feel that if Subaru sends targeted emails to customers referencing their specific VINs instructing them to perform updates on their own, Subaru should supply or reference all the information the customer needs to do the update in the email including the check you mentioned.

I was a little gun-shy about applying updates after receiving a letter in February of this year extending the warranty on the head unit due to what sounded like a lot of problems that seemed to be software related. My unit has been acting fine for over four years but I didn't apply any of the three 2024 updates. This has me wondering if any of those updates introduced problems.

I'm going to hold off doing this one until more people have tried the current update before I do anything more about it.

I wish Subaru would explain what was being fixed with the updates they send. I'd like to know what components are being updated and for what reason. That way I can better judge whether or not I want to apply the update. If it was for better routing logic in Subaru's navigation app I'd be happy to apply it. If it was for safety reasons they should definitely let the customer know when they send the notice.

TCL - The procedure in the service bulletin is normally done at the dealership. The OTA procedure is normally not available for a few months. Subaru normally publishes a second Service Bulletin, 15-256-19R, when the OTA procedure is available. As a note, UL firmware versions are for Nav systems.

Thanks for that info. It's unfortunate that Subaru didn't explain the OTA delay when they sent the email to the customers asking them to perform the procedure. Their customer service number at the bottom of the email may be getting a lot of calls now :). I tried calling before I started this thread and after I was transferred to the correct department the phone just rang and rang until it hung up on me.

Yes. I have the same software version as you. Connecting to a WiFi hotspot and trying to update generates an "update failed. Retry?" message. When I called my dealer he suggested I disconnect the battery so as to completely reset the HU and try again. Will try that eventually.

I got the screen that said : "Software Up to Date" twice even though my installed software was the previous version. I reset my clock to the current time (off by 1 minute) and the current update downloaded and installed with no problem in about 10 minutes. I don't know if resetting the clock made any differance, but the instructions state that the clock must display the current time, so I reset it.

tried updating my 2020 and it wouldn’t update, as of 7/25 I have no issue…
I think we can say”if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

I got the same email for our '22 Crosstrek. I'm holding off for now. Odd that they can track mileage, tire pressure, etc. etc., but they want us to do our own system updates? I have the system set to automatically do updates, but why now do I have to do it? Maybe it's to generate biz for the service departments. ;) Edit: I read the bulletin that the user so kindly posted above. I rarely use the head unit for anything other than the basic radio and the aux feature where I run the audio for my Uniden scanner.

An important update to your vehicle’s software is available!
Great news! Your 2022 Crystal White Pearl Crosstrek (VIN: XYZ1234) is receiving a new software update. This update is at no cost to you. To complete this update, you will need a strong Wi-Fi signal.
_

You can use one of two Wi-Fi sources:

    • Your home Wi-Fi (if it reaches your parked location)

    • Your phone’s Wi-Fi hotspot (if your phone and data plan are capable)
You will know that you are on the most up-to-date software when your software version shows as Rel_UK.25.04.70
Note: You may have two software versions available if your current software is not up-to-date.
