Thanks for the reply,
Some powdered graphite and the following procedure seem to have solved the problem.
With foot on brake place car in Park, apply parking brake, turn off ignition while pushing in key.
I think I would try a fine wire brush if I needed to smooth out the key.

I went with the Murphy's Law solution. I bought the replacement part and the trim removal tool kit and threatened the car with them. Few problems since. Toggling the shift lever trigger several times seems to help. The actual disassembly of the shifter and replacement of the park range switch looks complex. I'm going to leave well enough alone for the moment.
