I removed the plastic lumbar piece! I was so nervous to do it but I watched a couple of videos on YouTube and pulled the seat apart. It made me nervous but I was even more nervous to drive a car for 5+ years with an uncomfortable seat. I am so proud of myself. :)
Great job Star11girl! YT and a set of tools are your friend. I sat in the limited before buying my Sport just to check it out (was waiting for them to pull the Sport around and the limited was on the showroom floor) and I thought the seats were pretty stiff. Wasn't in it long enough to feel the lumber support, but I would have done the exact same thing you did, as living with that kind of discomfort for the next few years would have sucked big time!

I think he alluded to the fact you took the time to reply the same thing to three different people on the forum, stating that you removed the lumbar piece. While it was very kind, we all see the same response thrice... lol

BTW, nice plastic mini Christmas tree in a pot.🎄
Ah! Ok! Noted. I am used to other formats and it’s a bit confusing. Thanks 😊

Did the removal of the plastic piece affect the heaters in any way? or are the heating elements in the fabric between the lumbar bulge and the surface?
I hadn’t checked but I went out there and turned the heated seats on to check. It seems to be working normally. I think the heater would be closer to the surface of the seats. And I still am loving it! :)

Help! I just bought a 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Limited. I am so excited! However, after sitting in it over an hour, I am realizing that the seats are quite stiff and uncomfortable and I’m having a panic that I just bought a new car that will not be comfortable. I am 5’4 and 120lb. These are things you just don’t notice when you are excited and go on a 3 minute test drive. I later realized I do not have the lumbar support feature, but it’s almost like this seat has a full lumbar support pushing into my lower back and I want it to go back. I go on a lot of long road trips and want to be comfortable. Any suggestions for me?

I have the same problem. The seat does not allow you to lift your thighs and knees, My Honda CRV had this adjustment and it makes a huge difference. Unfortunately I will have to get use to it.

This ^^ was the hardest thing for me to get used to, but then I realized I was used to sitting low and using the power tilt adjustment to support my thighs. On my Trek I can sit higher and that gives my thighs and knees more support.

Same, and one of the reasons we liked the Crosstrek. We both checked out the Crosstrek and the Outback at our local dealer and liked the height and adjustment of the Crosstrek's seats better.

I'm 6'5"/210lbs (36" inseam, so all legs) and I have my seat on my Limited all the way back and as low as I can go with it. I don't like sitting up high while driving. I think it comes from driving sports cars. The higher up you are, the higher the perceived center of gravity is, so the car feels like it handles better the lower you sit.

....these seat covers will last longer than the Suburu....I am using the ones that were in my 2000 Camaro....so they are 21 years old and still good.

Thank you for that feedback. What I actually did was watch a few YouTube videos and decided to pull the seat apart and removed the plastic lumbar piece that was protruding into my back. The seat transformed and are totally comfortable now.
I’m having same problem as many others have . I have a 2021 Crosstrek Suburu. What is the plastic piece in lumbar. Do you mean back of the back piece. I hope you mean that crazy lifted cushion on the rear of the sit that messes with a persons sit bones. Can you send link to video? Thank you

I am a Yoga teacher and my 2021 Suburu Crosstrek seat tightens my iliopsoas they are kind of like hip flexors. When I get out of car my iliopsoas is so tight I feel like it takes a moment to walk after I stand. It’s painful. It has NEVER happened anywhere else . All my Hondas were comfortable. I read one man said there is no front leg support. I am am going to try a yoga mat that’s thin and fold it to put under lower thighs. I’ll let you know if it works. I’m bummed such a great car lacks the designers of the seats being anatomy knowledgeable.

Do a search on Seat Jackers. they seem to solve the problem for many on the forum.

(Didn't Paul Simon do a song back in the 70's about Me and Ilio down by the school yard.)

Regarding uncomfortable seats in 2021 Suburu CrosstrekI finally may have found the answer.-For me personally- I have a curvature in my spine since I was a child. Never any back pain due to 50 years of yoga .I’m the one who mentioned iliopsoas tightens. If your sit bones aren’t even that’s when it tightens. So for me my rolled Yoga sticky mat that I make flatten under my sit bones evens out the seat.No other car seat in my life has been this skewed. They are flat but Suburu has a dip where your sit bones are forcing you on the front of your sit bones instead of sitting in center of sit bones. I think I finally figured it out for me. May not fix it for you. I will take photo later.

Thanks for the welcome. I ended up pulling the back seat apart and popping out the plastic lumbar support piece. It totally transformed my seat and it 100% more comfortable.
Hi! I am having similar issues with the lumbar. Has it still helped having the piece out? Is the seat cover loose or anything else you‘ve learned from removing that piece? I’m considering it. Thanks!

Hey everyone,

Star11girl never posted a link to the video. However, I am wondering if anyone has any advice on that pesky lumbar support on the Crosstrek. I have a 23 XV limited. However, that lumbar in the driver seat is very uncomfortable… the pax seat without it is sooo much better.
Any thoughts would be great. Been looking throughout the internet but cannot find something reliable.

thanks in advance!

I’m going to get the lumbar support removed eventually. I using towels now. Not perfect but better. Looking for a tech to remove lumbar support.

Hi - i am having a similar issue w/ my new 2023 CrossTrek - have not experienced this in a diff car before. Any suggestions on how to get the plastic piece removed? i tried getting a cushion that helps elevate the 'dip' in the bucket seat but thats not helping either.

There are videos on how to remove it from outback’s and foresters. I have opened up the back of the seat and see the plastic piece I just haven’t done it yet.
