I had to replace both driver side Vvt actuators on the family's MY18 at about 15k. Ours were leaking oil, but also made that side of the engine quite noisy(and no cam adjustment, IE advancement). Takes 10 minutes to replace and the factory units are about $75 a piece from online discounting dealers. Car ran much better afterwards and better performance(and mpg, less noise).
Not knowing the maintenance history, you might consider baselining it, service wise and clear the codes to see what happens afterwards.
