Yeah, I have to work it into reverse sometimes. I usually clutch-out-clutch-back-in and then pop it and it works.

 

Do you have a lever that you have to pull up while moving it into reverse?

 

There is a very definite sweet spot to hit the reverse position on the first attempt. We use the 2nd to 1st to Reverse approach when she is being moody. Once it engages you get a solid locked in clicked feel.

Yeah, me too. Sometimes it wants to grind before it goes in. Dealer claims that there's nothing wrong.
What's the 2nd to 1st to Reverse approach?

Same issue with the other two Subaru MT's I have owned. I just pop it into another gear or two and try again or clutch release and try again.

I'd say that the reverse gear sits in a very relaxed position when not in use.

I do find second gear to be problematic to get into from third or first at times. Bloody annoying when you really need it.

 

Its a Subaru thing at least in my moms 2008 outback and my 2013 Impreza clutch in clutch out or go up into 5 then down annoying yes issue for concern no

 

I had that problem with a 93 Mazda. I got use to it after a while but my wife always had a hard time with it right up until we got rid of it around 2001.

Ah, I didn't know that about XVs. Now I don't feel quite so bad when I have a hard time finding reverse.

If your still rolling forward you'll always have issues.

You must stop fully. And it works every time.

 

Yeah I have that problem every now and then. Twice it went into 4th and was completely stuck that I couldn’t get it out of 4th despite the clutch being engaged. Stalled out as expected when the car was on. Couldn’t move thru the gears at all. Each time I’ve been trying to back out of my parking spot! Dealership still claims nothing is wrong even though I was stranded 200 miles from home.
