Out of the blue the passenger side windshield wiper started making a slight scraping noise that went from slight to nails on the blackboard crazy omw home. (only five miles but pouring rain...) There seems to be a screw??, in the housing sharp enough to cut the glass. The dealership claims it was caused by an "accident" hence it's not covered by the warranty. (#2 can i claim it under comprehensive on my insurance if they stick to this claim??) $738 to replace??? (3.4 hour of labor of course) On inspection there does NOT appear to be any external damage (NONE) to the top of the arm and running my finger under where it hits the glass is a very sharp screw that is the cause. I just want to be armed when the part comes in and they insist it was damaged and is not a defect. In the meantime, I put a washer under the housing to keep it elevated so if it rains it will keep it from further scraping the glass... They said this is fine btw and doesn't interfere with the warranty further. TIA

I don't see a "screw" on the arm, but a rivet . I'm mildly surprised that might have popped off, but stuff happens. You might make sure the nuts for the arm are torqued to spec with blue loctite on them. I'd also inspect the wiper transmission behind(IE worn out joints, etc..). If the system isn't working smoothly, it has a tendency to break things apart. This was the case with e30 BMW's back in the day. Sorry to hear, hopefully they will right your car.
