With one side done, the flasher mod keeps progressing but I don’t recommend it and won’t be posting a DIY.

The 5mms were too big so I drilled. When you drill, plastic bits get inside. The internal housing isn’t sealed. Plastic gets everywhere and no combination of sucking and blowing with a shop vac can get it all out from the stop light area thanks to the internal texture. I really, really, really hope my tail light tint hides the mess I made.

I’ll still have to drill the other side but this time I’ll be taping my shop vac nozzle over the turn signal bulb hole.

I’m not overly impressed with the result of the one side but I’m hoping that once complete, the result will somewhat resemble my vision. It could also be that I haven’t got the flasher module yet so I had it on a test transformer.

Edit: OK.... I’ll post a DIY if the second drilling works out and it looks alright in the end.

The jury is still out regarding happiness of my current project but it’s all wired up and waiting for the flasher module. I hope it turns out at least OK. That said; while I have the pics and process down, no DIY until I’m happy with it. On the other hand, had I gotten 3mm bulbs, I probably wouldn’t have had my issues.

I took apart my first housing today so that I could correct some mistakes. First, Princess Auto had short 4 wire trailer harness extensions on sale so I got two, cut them in half and soldered one end to the LED tails. The other end got soldered to the run inside the car. Now you can easily unclip them to remove the housing. Second, I ran a proper loom. I’m happy with the work I did but think the project was a bad idea.

Otherwise... turns out the stuff inside the tail light lens was not me! I began drilling the second housing with the shop vac gorilla taped to the turn signal hole but after a slow straight shot, I Turned the housing to fined all sorts of crap on the inside of the brake light lens yet nothing on the inside of the turn signal lens. So... something inside caused the mess. I aggravated it but it wasn’t created by my work.

My new tail light tint just got shipped from JDMFV and I’m on my way to Virginia on Sunday.

In other Stamford news, I’m going to buy an instrument planet switch cap and an OEM switch to drop in where I modified the existing cap to install the flasher switch. It’s a smidgen off center and my shape customizing efforts didn’t go as perfect as I had hoped. It still looks pretty damn good but it bugs me.

The flasher arrived and I got busy getting the final component in place. All wired up aaaaaanddddd...

You know that fancy variable DCV transformer I have....? yeah... when I tested the LED leads, I had it on reverse polarity. I’ve just spent the last hour and a bit repairing and I’m only half done.

My tail light flashers are DONE!!!!!

I’m happier than I though I’d be. Maybe because it’s over, maybe because I’m not as disappointed in the end result as I expected to be.

The only change I can foresee is getting proper high intensity ambers but then we have a size issue.

Plan A: invent a 5mm high intensity diode
Plan B: find a high intensity amber diode, separate it from the chip and run wires between them
Plan C: find an existing H I that will fit through the bulb socket hole, secure it tot the inside base and run the wires thorough where I currently have my diodes. The I’ll hate that I drilled the larger holes even more than I do today. Gawd, I hope my tail tint arrives soon.

Maybe because you're already on your third pint of Boddington's and you have the beer goggles on...

Lol, no beer today. Docs been too busy for that. I’m getting ready for two weeks in lovely Suffolk Virginia. At least I know where to get good food in the Hampton Roads area.

Including a place with Boddingtons on tap.

I’ll think about it as I’m a little embarrassed as to how much time it took me (due to fudge ups) and the lack luster performance of my chosen hardware. The good news is that as soon as I find a better LED that fits, it’ll be a very easy swap.

Currently sitting at YYZ and I just resolved my flasher problem.

Parts are on their way from a fantastic shop in Australia. Big shout out to BL LED Optronics who encourages customers to contact them for advice on projects. A couple days after I explained what I was doing, had done and what I need to change, they wrote back with product information and suggestions.

I fired up my VPN and made the order. I’ve got 20 superflux high intensity amber LEDs (they said that’s the type used in OEM tail lights), 20 560 ohm resistors and 2 pcbs, shipped for about $25 CAD, less than $20 USD. It feels great to not get ripped off for either part price or shipping price; note that I’ve since found the LEDs cheaper elsewhere but the difference is minor unless buying bulk. I feel like I paid for the assistance and am happy for it.

They may even arrive before I get home but I’d be surprised to seem them before the 28th.
