Warning Lights / Check Engine & Transmission Alerts Come on (No Drive Issues)

Hello...,

CrosssTrek XV Hybrid, first-time Subaru owner here, since January 2014, and love the car... Found this forum after experiencing the issue reporting here, and wanting to know if anyone has experienced / heard of this?

Details:

Late the other evening, getting into car, all sorts of warning lights started coming on (Transmission, ABS, "Hill Assist") and "Check Engine" light then came on (& steady) for the first time ever.

Continued happening that evening (even with stop / start of the car), with ABS, and "Hill Assist" warnings on, and also on the next morning (with also the "AT OIL TEMP" light also on / flashing, even though car was cold started).

Made arrangements to take the car in to Subaru Service that evening, which (Murphy's Law) the warnings stopped happening, and they could not find anything wrong (But noted an alerting system that is part of the transmission).

Today, all of the warnings again came on, while I was driving the car (I took a photo of the dash... The "AT OIL TEMP" light is flashing).

The thought presently, seems to be replacing the transmission / part of the transmission that drives the alerting (although still tbd). Looking around to see if this is something anyone else has experienced. If allows, attaching photo here

Will have to let others who own/drive the CVT transmission, so into Dealer and they scanned (presume) and NO CODES FOUND ?? My thought is a TCM, issue, but that is only a guess, not sure if the CVT will indeed set a trouble code, although if the A/T fluid temp light is displayed CODE SHOULD BE THERE ??

Certainly NOT something the Owner/driver can repair, and Not something to play around with, Dealer TO REPAIR

Good thing Subaru's have Great Warranties !!

Don't want to get too off topic from the OP's issue but this statement took me a little off guard. I'm new to Subaru, but when I was researching my purchase their warranties appeared to me to be among the worst of all manufacturers. In fact this was one of the biggest things that gave me pause. People talk about how reliable Subarus are but why such short warranty windows?

troutbum, could you please elaborate a bit on what it is that makes you say "Subaru's have Great Warranties?"

Maybe there's something I'm not seeing. Like I said, I'm new.

I'm sure the OP's issue will be covered since the car is only a 2014. I'm just really curious about this point.

Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi all offer longer warranties than Subaru (but they probably have to). Among the Japanese, 5 years/60,000 miles is pretty standard. The Europeans only give you 4 years/48,000 miles and you NEVER want to own one of those cars outside of warranty.

So first responder to my thread here (which seems to have been taken over by a discussion of warranties...) said something about "codes"...

I also read in another thread about codes, and there even may be an app( ? ) that allows us to see the car's (our own) codes?

Who can shed some light on that? (this is my first experience as a Subaru owner, which thus-far, for 16 months has been a good / great one! But have not really taken too much advantage of anything except the driving part...).

As far as warranty... I know my car is covered... That not an issue, and I guess the dealership even told me I could have a loaner, while they did the work for a few days (I had that with my old Ford Explorer a few years back..., but had to pay extra...).

I'm an IT "Geek" by trade, so I'm out here Googling, and looking around..., and would be cool on the codes, if I myself could dig on that level (The warning lights popped up, constantly for 2 days, but then mysteriously disappeared the evening I started to drive my car to the dealership after work..., so unless they are stored historically, somehow, which one would hope, they weren't apparent / could not be repeated by them, or me... Until today, a day later, after my lengthy drive to work).

Thanks again(!) This forum seems really cool, and I know I'm a "Newbie" as a Subaru owner, but have quite a few friends whom helped push me...

This is where all the information you have just written down regarding the symptom(s) needs to be related to the Servicing dealership, Things like ambient temperature, while driving, length of trip in miles, road conditions, (heavy to light traffic, stop and go ?) You had mentioned a lengthy drive to work, this needs to be conveyed to Service Staff, as they usually have a test drive route they routinely use( trust me it will be the shortest possible,as techs will be looking for their next job, if nothing turns up).

Service Mgr/and service writer for a LONG time .....

The CVT is controlled by a control unit,(brains of the operation) now I am not sure how sophisticated this is in the Subaru, but domestics typically have a unit that the software can be updated periodically for things like shift patterns, harsh shifting, cold-hot etc, also has the ability to have it's Factory parameters read while Factory scanner is plugged in,and tech can Record what is going on during the Test drive( Most of the counter scan tools WILL NOT BE ABLE TO DO THIS).

You Need to give this information to the Service dept, arrange to leave your vehicle for a couple of days for sure, Loaner for you to drive N/C, this might take a couple of visits, and SOA may need to get involved to help Dealership staff correct this issue, BE PATIENT, it will be remedied TO YOUR SATISFACTION....

I would recommend Not wasting your money to purchase a scan tool, that is what the Dealership has in its Essential Tools to be a Subaru Authorized Dealership, They are Here to Fix these sorts of Problems for you the Paying, and Loyal Customer!!

Please Post what they find regarding this problem

Cheers

I had a similar experience with my non-hybrid 2014 XV MT with less than 100KM on the odometer. Check engine, dynamic control system, hill assist, ABS, emission controls warnings. Dealership couldn't find any record of any of these warnings in the ECU memory.

A couple of days later, the check engine light came on and stayed on, the anti-slip warning icon too, and it couldn't be turned on or off, Cruise control didn't work, (my wife is the only one to try cruise control up to now) its icon was flashing, she didn't test the ABS, but I suspect is was disabled too.

She unplugged a passive display and recording unit I had attached to the OBD socket, and after parking the car for a few hours, everything had gone back to normal.

I'm keen to figure this out, because I don't like the fact that the ECU is keeping a record of our driving that we can't access. I'm hoping it's just due to a loose connection, noting that the OBD port has no provision for securing an attached device.

PS. Are you QUITE SURE there were no driving problems? I've been driving my vehicle for a couple of weeks, and haven't had any evidence of ABS or Hill Assist or cruise control working. So it's quite possible some or all of those weren't working for you, and you had no way of knowing, other than the warning messages/icons. I'd say that generally, it's a baaad idea to ignore them without actual testing.

Good Day Joe P.

I'm curious as to if you were able to discover any more info about this issue. We have a 2015 with Eye sight (16,000kms) and my wife had the same thing happen to her the other day while driving. Same issue plus the disabling of all the Eye sight features.

She said it didn't effect the driving and an off/on fixed it. That being said, with all the news lately about crazy car defects, having all the Waring lights light up while driving does not make me feel warm and fuzzy inside.

Thanks Joe,

Hey, Ben... Sorry have not been back here in a wile, but if your issue is anything like mine (and 16K miles well within warranty) then definitely get it into the dealership! (assume you have?)...

Subaru actually gave me a loaner vehicle for almost a month, and completely replaced the transmission control unit ("TCM"), as well as parts related to it in the transmission. The issue has not repeated since (I'm presently up to ~ 25,000 miles, and think got vehicle back in June, 2015, so going on almost 4 months).

Need to do a bit of research, and go back & put all of the history in here, but essentially, after my car had this issue with all of the warning lights going on once (what is "eye sight"?), and they simply reconnected all cables, and then it repeated again, they took it for a long weekend, and gave me the loaner, and told me corporate decided to replace the "TCM" (even though the codes they were pulling were not giving them much to go on... Assume because each time t happened, I immediately got the vehicle to them)...

My CrossTrek is a 2014.

Hope that helps!

I've seen other posts that indicated a brake light switch failure can result in multiple errors showing up. One thing the check easily enough is to make sure the brake lights are working. That's probably a good thing to do regularly even if no other problems are indicated.

Hi Joe. Did you ever find out what caused this? My 2014 Crosstrek is doing it as well.
