Top 10 Cheapest Vehicles to Insure for Teens

Insurance isnít kind to teenage drivers. Rates are usually double the price of experienced drivers. Luckily CarInsure.com has provided a list of the top 10 best vehicles to insure for teenagers.

The rates are calculated based on a Washington family: a married couple driving a 2011 Honda Accord and a 2009 Chevrolet Traverse, with a clean driving record and good credit. Their teenage driver is a 16-year-old male, also with a clean driving record. This list covers a five-year insurance impact. The vehicles on this list are from 2008, or 2009.

Tenth on the list is the 2009 Ford Fusion, equipped with ESC. This car gains its price thanks to a perfect NHTSA front impact score and the highest score possible for frontal-offset and side impact tests from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. The key to this model though is the optional electronic stability control.

Next on the list is the economical 2009 Honda Civic Sedan. Like the other cars on this list, it has an impressive array of safety features like front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints. Thanks to these additions the Civic gets a perfect score from NHTSA in front impact safety, and nearly perfect score for side impact tests (4/5 stars for front passengers and 5/5 for rear). All this means is that you (and your insurance company) can sleep soundly knowing your teen is safe.

The Nissan Rogue is an attractive option for teen drivers thanks to its standard safety equipment. Anti-lock brakes, Stability and Traction control, front seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and active front head restraints all help make the Rogue as safe for the driver as possible. No wonder itís number 8 on this list!

The Scion xB is a great idea for teen drivers, not only thanks to its low price, but itís good reliability and customization options. According to the latest Consumer Reports survey, Toyota (Including Scion) have had outstanding reliability.

The Mercury Milan is a slightly more upscale twin of the Ford Fusion we had at number 10. That means a lot of the features that make the Fusion such a good choice for young drivers, also make the Milan a good option. The perfect rating by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset and side-impact tests still stands making the Milan a great choice for teenage drivers in regards to insurance.

The Subaru Forester is recognized around the industry as a great, fun to drive crossover. It’s also known for being quite safe, which is likely why you’ll see it right here at number 5 on our list. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Forester a perfect rating for frontal offset and side-impact crashes and named it a top safety pick in the compact SUV class. Additionally the Forester also earned a perfect five stars in all front- and side-impact testing by NHTSA. These ratings must have been easy for the Forester to come by with its traction and stability control and active front head restraints and front-seat side airbags. All these elements help make Forester an affordable vehicle to insure a teen with.

The full-sized Ford Taurus isn’t a flashy car. It doesn’t have a go-fast attitude, or a sexy design. It’s a perfectly hum-drum vehicle, which is what makes it a cheap vehicle to insure for teenagers. Add in the fact that it gets perfect scores across the board by NHTSA, and you’ve got one of the safest vehicles out there.

Consider the 2008 Mercury Sable as a luxury edition of the Ford Taurus. What that means is arguably there’s less flashiness that on the Ford full-size sedan, and less of an incentive to drive aggressively. Add in the shared NHTSA ratings for safety, and you’ve got one of the safest and cheapest to insure vehicles to put your teenager in.

The Honda Accord takes the number 2 spot on our list thanks to an attractive overall package of safety and reliability. All Accords come standard with the full suite of safety equipment making which certainly helps to drive down insurance rates. These safety features include: anti-lock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags and full-length curtain airbags.

In a surprise twist, the Audi A3 takes the pole position on this list. The A3 is arguably one of the best looking cars on the list, and probably one of the more expensive. But the higher price is likely to net you more savings on insurance, thanks to a ton of safety features. These include front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, anti-lock brakes and stability control. There is also optional seat-mounted side airbags for rear passengers. Insurance companies will certainly be happy with teenagers driving this car and likely, so will the teenagers who are driving it.
