    New XV Owner (Dads)

    Hey guys,
The name is Jack, from Sydney. My dad just picked up his new XV yesterday. now has 000014k's!
So i have signed up to be able to lurk around and soak up info or ask questions as my dad struggles to change the clocks at daylight savings.
ill be doing all the detailing, and perhaps some sneaky stuff he won't notice
I myself drive a Liberty and am passionate about Subaru's and mental for anything with a motor.
I may be able to borrow it if you guys have meets. also if anyone wants semi-decent photography of their XV let me know, my work can be seen here:https://www.facebook.com/BlueJamPhotography
here it is anyway. its a 6 speed manual

First question is: has anyone had theirs tuned? possibly by Matt at Kido? first complaint is that its a little 'torque deprived'. i am going to get dad to fill it with 98 and see how that goes as i found out the cheap *** dealership gave it to us with awful E10 in it. so 98 and flash the ECU (even though I'm fairly sure they are tuned for 98/100 from japan - correct me if wrong) but a flash won't hurt anyway.

Awesome Jack! Congrats to your Dad! And yeah, I notice that mine goes better on 98. There is a thread on fuel type, but lots of differences of opinion there! Lol 😳

Hey there Jack and welcome .
I pleased your helping your dad out!

I wont get drawn into the great fuel debate, however for me personally I use 91 "ethanol free" If that's not available Ill use 95 then 98. 98 seems like a waste of money to me as the extra cost does not offset the economy savings. Any how each for their own, you make your own mind up.

Balmain/Wollstonecraft depends what house we are at...

I've seen you around on SubyClub/Ozfoz
you probably would have seen my car on there under the same name.

yeah I've told him to run 98 for now and see how it goes. i find that some stations only give you the choice of E10 or 98 anyway He has a dual card from work anyway so they pay for fuel...
    cheers

Welcome Jack, glad to have you here, hope you and your Dad enjoy his XV and the forum.

You and the tuners may find that this new generation of boxers are tuned for economy and not much wiggle room when it comes to open source tunes. That's at least what threads in the larger North American forums are reporting. Even the larger tuners don't seem to be developing much for an engine that has been out for a year in the Impreza line-up. It may be different in Australia but they also may be finding similar results with this new format ... tuned for economy. Just be careful.

And get used to E-gas, especially if your country has an EPA, pretty much the norm in North America, except for a few refineries producing non-ethanol blends. Also where climates dictate it we get the dreaded "winter gas" 4-5 months of the year, blended often with even more ethanol. Of course Ethanol was supposed to be the saviour in lowering fuel prices.

And since there are not any rules (yet) about entering someone else's XV in the XV of the Month http://www.subaruxvforum.com/forum/s...th-Submissions I strongly suggest that you enter your Dad's XV. After viewing some of your (great) photography I think you'll capture the essence of what the XV can be in the environment. Damn the modifications as 90%++ of the XV's are stock but if you need a couple of suggestions, I'd argue for anyone that an air freshener hanging from the mirror, a bow tied to the grille, maybe even string up some lights around the head-liner and light them up, qualify as modifications, albeit temporary and in the spirit of the season.

Enjoy the Forum and the XV if 'Dad' let's you drive it.

    Cheers
    Doug

Congratulations Jack, I have only had mine for a few days and loving it. With fuel in Sydney, correct me if I'm wrong, but don't they put ethanol in all petrol, silly State Law.

ScoobyXV-L, I got a blasting on the Whirlpool Forums once because I mentioned I had in the past used 91 in my Impreza and changed over to 95. The dude said that 91 caused a lot of sludge to form in the engine, of course most others blasted him and told him he was talking crap. If it was the truth I'm sure Subaru would be saying that the cars will only run on 95/98, otherwise they would be replacing a lot of engines under warranty.

    thanks guys
yeah don't get me wrong you could use E10 for an entire life of a boxer engine, its just not ideal (especially for older suby's) the new ones I'm not really up to date with, theyre probably made to take into account for E10. what subaru and other mechanics have told me is that because the engine block is famously 'horizontally opposed', that E10 causes higher amount of carbon to build up. all it needs is a flush every 50,000k.
i guess it comes down to personal values. i myself don't mind paying an extra $4-5 when i fill up. chump change really.

thanks guys for all your input! really impressed with the warm welcome!
ill try to do a photo shoot of the XV some time before the end of the year.

So i had a quick chat to a guy who tunes cars and is an absolute guru at it, and he says there is very little power gains or fuel economy gains to be made from a tune. the only noticeable improvement he has been able to make is getting the throttle to be more smooth. so unfortunately if you want power gains then you'll have to do a custom turbo conversion or an engine swap.
i think an STI WRX motor would be pretty rad, but i doubt my dad would :/
    cheers
